SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Wofford men's tennis team opened Southern Conference play on Monday afternoon with a 6-1 win over The Citadel at the Reeves Tennis Center. The Terriers swept the doubles matches and then took five of the six singles matches for the win.
The Terriers had an early lead in all three doubles matches.
Ian Rasheed and
Jack Deveney had a 6-3 win at the #1 position.
Julian Brager-Carlsen and
Valdemar Dubin clinched the doubles point with a 6-2 win at the #2 position. At the #3 position,
Owen Dooley and
Hugo Rask were up 6-5 and broke serve to win 7-5.
In singles,
Parker Mariencheck had a 6-1, 6-0 win at the #3 position to get the Terriers started.
Jack Burdell added a 6-3, 6-2 win at the #5 position. At #6 singles,
Ian Rasheed won the first set 6-3 but was down 4-1 in the second set before coming back for a 7-5 win that clinched the conference victory.
Daniel Clivio won the first set at the #1 position 6-2 but trailed 6-5 in the second set before tying it at 6-6. In the tiebreaker, he was down before winning 8-6.
The remaining two matches went to three sets. At the #2 position,
Jack Deveney lost the first set 6-4 and won the second set 6-3. In the third set, he was down 4-1 and fell 6-4. In the final match to finish,
Julian Brager-Carlsen lost the first set 7-6 with a 7-4 tiebreaker. He won the second set 6-3 and in the third set tiebreaker he was down 6-1 before rallying for a 10-6 win.
"We have a close team and today we played like it," said head coach
Rod Ray. "I'm encouraged by our discipline and effort."
Wofford (4-2, 1-0) will remain at home for its next match on Thursday against North Greenville University.
