Wofford Baseball Wins Conference Opener 8-7 over UNCG

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Wofford baseball team opened Southern Conference play with an 8-7 win over UNC Greensboro on Friday evening at Russell C. King Field. The Terriers (17-9, 1-0) took an early lead after two scoreless innings and held off the Spartans (12-15, 1-3) after a late-inning comeback in the eighth and ninth innings.

Cullen Condon (2-1) made his start on the mound and pitched five innings, giving up just one hit and striking out five batters. Branton Little and Champ Davis followed in relief. Davis closed out the ninth inning for Wofford, giving up one hit and striking out one batter to secure his fourth save of the season. Designated hitter Marc Quarrie led the Terriers with one run, three hits, including a three-run home run and four RBI. Ben Timblin followed with two runs on two hits and one RBI.

The game saw two quick scoreless innings to start before the energy started ramping up in the third. The Terriers retired the Spartans in order in the top of the third. With one out in the bottom of the third, Cade Collins had a double to centerfield on a 2-2 count. With two outs, three straight RBI singles from Logan Tribble, Ben Timblin and Marc Quarrie would give Wofford a 3-0 lead. In the fourth inning the Terriers added one run on a wild pitch for a 4-0 advantage.

Two scoreless innings followed with the Spartans only managing two hits on the Terriers. The seventh inning saw UNCG come back to drive in two runs to cut Wofford's lead 4-2. Marc Quarrie answered back after the seventh inning stretch with a three-run homer to center field to boost the lead to 7-2. UNCG began the comeback with a two-RBI double to cut the lead to 7-4 in the eighth. Cade Collins would add to the Terriers' lead once again after an RBI double to drive home Lucas Manning for an 8-4 game. UNCG had three hits and one run to start the ninth inning. The Spartans continued with a sacrifice fly and ground out to cut it to an 8-7 ballgame. With two outs, UNCG had one more hit before Champ Davis had a strikeout to close out the conference opener for the Terriers.
