Women’s Basketball Closes Season Against No. 6 Samford

ASHEVILLE, N.C. – The No. 3 seeded Wofford women's basketball suffered a tough 59-57 loss to the No. 6 seeded Samford Bulldogs in the Southern Conference Quarterfinals on Thursday afternoon at Harrah's Cherokee Center. The Terriers trailed by 18 points halfway through the third quarter but were able to bring the game to within two points late in the fourth quarter.
 
Wofford finished the game shooting 20-of-58 (34.5%) from the floor while hitting five triples. Samford shot 20-of-49 (40.8%) from the field and made eight threes at a 44.4 percent clip. The Terriers outrebounded Samford 39-31, including 16 offensive rebounds that resulted in 19 second chance points. Wofford outscored Samford 24-22 in the paint.
 
Queen Ikhiuwu led the team with 16 points and 14 rebounds for her sixth double-double of the season. Molly Masingale followed behind with 15 points, including a 5-of-6 performance from the charity stripe. Maddie Heiss shot 6-of-10 from the floor en route to 14 points and 11 rebounds. Masingale and Ikhiuwu led the team with two assists. Toni Warren rejected two shots.
 
Gabby Mundy got the scoring started for both teams, nailing a jump shot to put Wofford up 2-0 early on in the first quarter. Samford responded with a triple, as the two teams would trade baskets in the first few minutes. Seven unanswered points from the Terriers would eventually give Wofford an 11-7 lead with 3:24 left in the stanza. Wofford ultimately extended that lead to 16-11 at the end of the quarter. Maddie Heiss shot a perfect 4-of-4 from the field to give her nine points in the opening frame.
 
Samford scored the first basket of the second quarter, but Molly Masingale responded with four-straight points to give Wofford a 20-13 lead with 6:24 left in the half. Samford rattled off a 12-1 run from there, including 10 unanswered points, to take the lead. Masingale found Queen Ikhiuwu under the basket for a layup, giving the team its first field goal in nearly five minutes of game action. Despite the dry spell, Wofford would enter the second half only trailing by five points, 28-23.
 
Samford started the second half off with an 11-2 run, as Wofford trailed by 14 points with 6:32 left in the quarter. Samford would eventually take an 18-point lead. Wofford did not give up, however, going on a 14-4 run to end the quarter. Elli Porter kickstarted the Samford skid with a corner three, and Molly Masingale added seven points during the stanza to bring the game back to single digits. Wofford trailed Samford 51-43 at the end of the third quarter.
 
Both teams traded baskets to start the fourth quarter, but Wofford rolled off seven unanswered points to bring the game within two with 2:32 remaining in the contest. Wofford was able to keep Samford scoreless for the final five minutes of the game. The Terriers were not able to overcome the 18-point deficit, however, falling to Samford 59-57 in the SoCon Tournament Quarterfinals.
 
Wofford closes the season with a 16-13 record and a 10-4 mark in conference play. The team claimed its second-ever regular season championship after a three-way tie with Chattanooga and ETSU.
