SPARTANBURG, S.C. – In the final regular season match of the season, the Wofford College women's tennis team earned a 5-2 win over Mercer on Friday afternoon at the Reeves Tennis Center. The Terriers won two of the three doubles matches and then won four of the six singles matches.
Grace Agster and
Quinn Bernthal got doubles underway with a 6-1 win at the #1 position. At the #3 position,
Katie Godfree and
Marie Henriksen were down 2-1 early before coming away with a 6-4 win that clinched the doubles point for the Terriers.
Chloe Elliott and
Ella Suk trailed 3-0 at the #2 position and were able to take a 4-3 lead before falling 6-4 to the Bears.
In singles, the Terriers won the first set in five of the six matches.
Katie Godfree earned a 6-2, 6-1 win at the #3 position and
Grace Agster won 6-2, 6-3 at the #1 position to give Wofford a 3-0 lead in the overall match.
Ella Suk clinched the victory for the Terriers with a 7-5, 6-1 win at the #4 position. The team's lone senior,
Chloe Elliott, had a 6-3, 7-5 win at the #5 position.
The final two matches were decided in three sets. At the #2 position,
Quinn Bernthal lost the first set 7-6 (8-6), but won the second set 7-6 (7-5). The Bears picked up a point with a 10-5 win in the third set tiebreaker. At the #6 position,
Marie Henriksen won the first set 6-4, dropped the second set 6-2, and then the Bears won the third set 7-5 to end the day.
"I am so proud of this team," said head coach
Krissy Hall. "We showed up with the right mindset and great energy from the start. I am proud of the way we battled and found a way to get it done on Senior Day."
After the match, the team recognized senior
Chloe Elliott in her final home match for the Terriers. Wofford (11-7, 4-3) will open play in the Southern Conference Tournament on Thursday, April 16, in Chattanooga. Wofford has a winning mark in the SoCon in three straight seasons. Mercer is 8-12 overall and 1-5 in the Southern Conference.
