CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. – To begin the 2026 Southern Conference Championship, the Wofford College women's tennis team defeated Samford 4-0 at the Champions Club on Thursday afternoon. The Terriers won the doubles point and then won three singles matches to close out the victory. Wofford advances to the semifinals for the third time in the last four seasons.
Doubles play was halted with a rain delay of nearly two hours just after the first points. When play resumed, the Terriers took a 3-2 lead in all three matches. The All-SoCon first team pair of
Grace Agster and
Quinn Bernthal closed out the #1 position with a 6-2 win.
Chloe Elliott and
Ella Suk added a 6-3 win at the #2 position to clinch the doubles point for Wofford. The match at the #3 position was left unfinished with
Katie Godfree and
Marie Henriksen leading 5-4.
In singles, Wofford won the first set in all six matches. At the #2 position,
Quinn Bernthal won the first set 6-1 before her opponent retired.
Grace Agster picked up a 6-2, 6-0 win at the #1 position.
Marie Henriksen clinched the overall match with a 6-3, 6-1 win at the #6 position.
The remaining three singles matches were left unfinished.
Katie Godfree won the first set at #3 singles 7-5 and trailed 2-3 in the second set. At the #4 position,
Ella Suk won the first set 7-5 but trailed 1-2 in the second set. At #5 singles,
Chloe Elliott won the first set 6-4 and trailed 3-4 in the second set.
"I am really proud of the way we came out today and set the tone from the start of the match," said head coach
Krissy Hall. "I thought we executed our strategies really well in both singles and doubles. We had great energy throughout. This was a total team win!"
The Terriers (11-7, 4-3) are the #4 seed and advance to the semifinals for just the fourth time in school history. The win was only the third 4-0 win in a Southern Conference Championship match. Samford finished their season at 11-11 overall as the #5 seed. Wofford advances to face #1 seed Furman on Friday at 10:00 a.m.
