SPARTANBURG, S.C. –The Wofford baseball team closed out their weekend series against UNC Asheville with a 20-9 win in eight innings to sweep the Bulldogs (16-24, 4-8). The Terriers (29-11, 8-1) had an early lead before the Bulldogs took a 9-8 advantage in the fifth inning. An explosive nine-run sixth inning lifted Wofford over UNC Asheville to capture the series.
John Gray made the start on the mound, pitching two innings.
Champ Davis,
Miller Alston and
Austin Laughlin followed in relief, with Davis and Laughlin striking out one batter each.
Branton Little (3-1) closed it out for the Terriers, pitching 2.2 innings. Little allowed just one hit while striking out three batters to secure the win.
Niko Brini,
Ben Timblin and
Lucas Manning led the Terriers with their four-RBI performances. Brini had two runs on two hits with two home runs. Timblin scored two runs and hit a grand slam, and Manning had three runs on three hits, including two home runs.
The Bulldogs scored two runs in the top of the first inning. The Terriers answered back in the bottom of the inning with three runs of their own. Wofford saw their first runs off of a wild pitch and an error, bringing home two runs to tie 2-2. A sacrifice bunt by
Hunter Herndon scored
Ben Timblin to lift the Terriers 3-2 over the Bulldogs. A scoreless second inning followed before Wofford's batting order came back in the third inning to plate three runs off a double from
Hunter Herndon and a single by
Tanner Hardin for a 6-2 ball game. The Bulldogs started the fourth inning with a double. An error allowed UNC Asheville to score to cut the game 6-3.
With two outs and two runners on base for the Bulldogs, a home run tied the game at 6-6, before the Terriers caught a runner stealing to retire to end the top of the fourth.
Lucas Manning, on a 1-2 count, hit a leadoff home run to boost the Terriers over the Bulldogs with a 7-6 advantage. With two outs,
Niko Brini hit his first home run of the game to push the score to 8-6.
Two doubles from the Bulldogs brought the score to 8-7 before a two-run home run lifted UNC Asheville 9-8 over the Terriers. After Wofford was retired in order to end the fifth inning, the Bulldogs started the sixth inning with another double, but pitching efforts by
Austin Laughlin and
Branton Little held off their chances to score. With one out in the Wofford half of the sixth, a triple by
Lucas Manning gave the Terriers a chance to score. A double by
Brady Gold drove home Manning to tie it up at 9-9. With bases loaded,
Ben Timblin hit a grand slam deep out of center field to lift Wofford 13-9. The Terriers' batting didn't stop there with an RBI single by
Tanner Hardin to make it a 14-9 game.
Lucas Manning followed with a three-run home run - his second of the day - lifting the Terriers to a 17-9 advantage.
The Terriers held off the Bulldogs for a quick 1-2-3 inning in the top of the seventh. The Bulldog's defense stranded two Terriers to push the game into the eighth inning. Two strikeouts by
Branton Little and an out at second led the Terriers to the bottom of the inning.
Lucas Manning reached base on an error and
Cade Collins walked. A walk-off three-run home run by
Niko Brini ended the game at 20-9 to secure the series sweep over the Bulldogs.
