Men’s Tennis Falls 4-3 At Furman

GREENVILLE, S.C. – On Thursday afternoon, the Wofford men's tennis team was defeated 4-3 by Furman at the Mickel Tennis Center. The Paladins won the doubles point and then won three of the six singles matches as both teams closed out Southern Conference regular season play.
 
Furman started doubles with a win at the #3 position and they claimed the doubles point with a win at the #2 position. At the #1 position, Jack Deveney and Valdemar Dubin were tied at 3-3 and took a 6-5 lead. With the match tied at 6-6, the Paladins won the tiebreaker 7-3.
 
In singles, the Terriers won the first set in four of the six matches. Jack Deveney picked up a point for Wofford with a 6-3, 6-2 win at the #3 position. After the Paladins won at the #4 position in straight sets to take a 2-1 lead, the four remaining matches were decided in three sets.
 
At the #1 position, Parker Mariencheck won the first set before dropping the next two sets. Hugo Rask earned a 6-3, 3-6, 6-3 win at the #2 position to cut the Furman advantage to 3-2. Ian Rasheed won the first set at the #6 position, but the Paladins won the next two sets to clinch the overall match. In the final singles match to conclude, Jack Burdell lost the first set at the #6 position before winning the second set 6-4 and then winning the third set 7-6 with an 11-9 tiebreaker.
 
Wofford (6-11, 1-6) will return home on Monday, April 13, to host King in the final regular season match of the season, with senior Ian Rasheed honored before the match. The Paladins are now 8-14 overall and 4-3 in the SoCon.
