SPARTANBURG, S.C. –The Wofford baseball team fell to Western Carolina 3-2 on Saturday afternoon at Russell C. King Field to tie the weekend series at one game each. The Terriers (31-16, 9-5) were down by one run before coming into the third inning to take a 2-1 lead. However, the Catamounts tied the game in the fifth inning at 2-2. With the game tied, the Catamounts (30-17, 11-6) plated the go-ahead run in the ninth inning.
Cullen Condon made the start for the Terriers, pitching six innings. Condon gave up two hits and two runs while striking out six batters.
Branton Little followed in relief, pitching for three innings. Little (3-2) gave up four hits and one run while striking out four batters.
After a scoreless first inning, Western Carolina had two outs and bases loaded when a hit by pitch advanced a Catamount for their first run of the game. The Terriers didn't see any scoring opportunities until the third inning. With a walk and two outs,
Niko Brini hit a single down the right field line to bring in
Lucas Manning to tie the game at 1-1.
Logan Tribble added a single before
Ben Timblin came to the plate and hit an RBI single to give Wofford a 2-1 lead. Both teams were retired in order in the fourth inning.
In the top of the fifth inning, Western Carolina had an RBI double to right field to tie the game once again 2-2. The sixth, seventh, and eighth innings were scoreless for both teams. In the top of the ninth, a walk and a double put runners on second and third base for Western Carolina. A single deep to right field drove in the go-ahead run for a 3-2 lead, but the Catamounts left the bases loaded. Wofford was retired in order in the bottom of the ninth to end the game.
