Softball Defeats Chattanooga 2-0 in First Round of SoCon Tournament

CHATTANOOGA, TENN. – The Wofford College softball team defeated Chattanooga 2-0 in the first round of the SoCon Tournament on Thursday evening at Frost Stadium. Abby Greenwood pitched a complete game shutout to help seal the victory.
 
Wofford improves to 34-17 on the season and will take on No. 1 seeded UNCG on Friday, May 8, at 10:00 a.m.
 
Abby Greenwood pitched the full game, tossing a seven-inning shutout to improve her record to 13-6 on the season. That is her second shutout of the season and the fourth of her career. Greenwood allowed three hits while striking out six batters. Leading the way offensively was Gracie Parker who batted 1-of-3 with the lone RBI of the game. Addison Lucier and Madison Thieke scored the two runs. Parker, Kate Platte, Rivers Sampson, and Kaytlin Greenwood each recorded a hit. Desirae Devine joined Greenwood and Thieke with one stolen base apiece. Wofford out hit Chattanooga 4-3. Both teams committed one error each.
 
Wofford struck early, taking a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. Addison Lucier, Kate Platte, and Brianna Stanley loaded the bases to start the inning, leading to an RBI from Gracie Parker. Chattanooga had runners on second and third in the third frame, but the defense held firm to escape the inning. The Terriers were able to add another run in the sixth inning, giving the team a 2-0 advantage. With Madison Thieke on first, Kaytlin Greenwood singled through the left side. Thieke and Greenwood would later steal a base, advancing the runners to second and third. On Greenwood's second base steal, the Chattanooga catcher committed a throwing error to bring in Thieke and put Wofford up 2-0. The Terriers would hold on for a 2-0 victory.
 
Wofford advances to take on No. 1 UNCG in the quarterfinals at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, May 8. UNCG defeated Wofford two out of three times earlier this season.
