SPARTANBURG, S.C. –The Wofford baseball team clinched the final home series against East Tennessee State University with a close 6-5 win at Russell C. King Field on Saturday afternoon. The Terriers (33-17, 11-6) had the early start with a 6-1 lead after four innings. However, the Buccaneers (29-19, 9-8) rallied with four unanswered runs over the next four innings, but the Terriers held off ETSU to secure the series win.
Cullen Condon started for the Terriers, pitching six innings. Condon (6-2) gave up seven hits and four runs with four strikeouts.
Austin Laughlin pitched the final three innings and earned his first career save as he gave up three hits and one run while striking out four batters.
Logan Tribble led Wofford with two hits and three RBI with
Tanner Hardin behind with one run on two hits and one RBI.
Brady Gold and
Lucas Manning each had one run on one hit with one RBI, respectively with
Niko Brini contributing to one run on two hits.
After a scoreless first inning, the Buccaneers were retired in order in the top of the second.
Lucas Manning walked to start for Wofford in the bottom of the second. With two outs,
Tanner Hardin hit a double down the left field line to bring in Manning for a 1-0 lead. After ETSU was again retired in order,
Niko Brini walked with one out in the bottom of the third.
Logan Tribble hit an RBI single to advance the lead to 2-0.
Ben Timblin reached first base on a fielder's choice.
Lucas Manning followed up with another single to center field to drive home Timblin, extending the lead to 3-0.
The Buccaneers got their bats going in the fourth, starting off with a single to centerfield. A walk and an RBI single to put ETSU on the board, 3-1. With one out in the bottom of the fourth,
Tanner Hardin hit a single to centerfield before stealing second. An RBI single by
Brady Gold followed to bring the lead to 4-1. The Terriers' batting order didn't stop there with a hit by pitch on
Cade Collins and a single by
Niko Brini to load the bases.
Logan Tribble hit a two-RBI double to lift Wofford 6-1 over ETSU going into the fifth. ETSU began the inning with a single before a two-run home run to centerfield cut the lead 6-3.
The Terriers saw a quick three up, three down inning in their half of the fifth. With one out in the top of the sixth, ETSU had a double to left field. An RBI single to left field cut the Terriers' lead to 6-4. Neither team scored in the seventh inning. ETSU carded a single to start the eighth. Two strikeouts by
Austin Laughlin followed, but a single with an error on the play allowed ETSU to cut the lead to 6-5. A groundout retired the Buccaneers. The Terriers had a double by
Marc Quarrie and a single by
Hunter Herndon in the bottom of the eighth. A walk to
Tanner Hardin loaded the bases, but the Terriers stranded all three runners to end the frame.
Austin Laughlin closed it out for the Terriers with back-to-back strikeouts and a flyout to center field to end the game at 6-5.
