SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Wofford College volleyball lost in five sets to Coastal Carolina University inside of Jerry Richardson Indoor Stadium on Thursday evening. The Terriers led 2-0 but could not hold on for the win. Wofford falls to 5-2 while Coastal Carolina improves to 4-2.
Four Terriers finished the night with double-digit kills, including a team-high 17 kills on a .382 hitting percentage from
Natalie Arnold.
Bradley Brown followed behind with 12 kills, along with 11 kills apiece from
Chloe Smith and
Avery White. White finished the match with a .455 hitting percentage.
Taylor Pecht dished out 28 assists to go along with 23 helpers from
Maddy Frazier. Frazier and Smith had three service aces each.
Laney Klika recorded two.
Klika led the team with 23 digs on the night, followed by a career-high 17 digs from
Ella Coleman.
Chloe Smith added 12 digs to go along with her 11 kills for her third double-double of the season. Leading the way at the net was
Bradley Brown with six blocks.
Natalie Arnold recorded three.
As a team, Wofford finished the night with 60 kills on a .228 hitting percentage compared to 61 kills on a .212 hitting percentage from Coastal Carolina. Wofford gained the edge at the service line, posting eight aces to Coastal Carolina's seven. The Chanticleers totaled 10 blocks to Wofford's eight.
Wofford jumped out to an 8-4 lead early in set one, highlighted by a pair of kills from
Natalie Arnold. Wofford continued to hold a comfortable 15-10 lead all the way into the media timeout. Coastal Carolina cut the deficit to two points, however, as Wofford led 18-16 before calling a timeout. The Terriers responded out of the break, taking set one 25-18.
The Terriers dominated set two, taking a quick 6-0 lead after two kills from
Charlotte Bell to begin the stanza. Coastal Carolina brought the Wofford lead back down to 8-4, but the team responded with four-straight points to stretch its lead back out to six, 12-4. That was the start of a 10-1 run. Wofford would go on to win set two 25-11.
It was back-and-forth to start the third set, until Coastal Carolina rallied off five-straight points to take an 11-6 lead. Wofford cut the lead down to three points later in the set, but Coastal Carolina responded with five more points in a row. Wofford could not complete the comeback, losing set three 25-14.
Neither team could take a comfortable lead in set four as there were four lead changes before the 15-point media timeout. Coastal Carolina held a 15-13 lead at the break. The Terriers were able to tie the set at 23-all before taking match point at 24-23. Wofford again held the winning serve at 26-25, but Coastal Carolina scored three-straight points to win set four 28-26.
Coastal Carolina grabbed a 4-2 lead in the final set, but Wofford answered with four consecutive points to take a 6-4 advantage. Coastal Carolina scored four of its own after that, however, with Wofford trailing 8-6. With the Terriers down 13-10 later on in the set, Wofford scored three points in a row to tie the frame at 13-all. With match point at 14-13, Coastal Carolina again scored three points of its own to win the set 16-14 and the match 3-2.
The Terriers will be back in action on Saturday, September 12, at 4:00 p.m. to take on South Carolina. The team will then welcome Clemson University on Sunday, September 13, at 3:00 p.m. Both matches can be streamed live on ESPN+.
