SPARTANBURG, S.C. — On Senior Day, the Wofford men's soccer team tied East Tennessee State University 1-1 on Saturday afternoon at Snyder Field. The Terriers extended their unbeaten streak to three matches but were unable to secure three points after a late goal by ETSU evened the score.
First Half
The first half was mostly a stalemate from both sides. ETSU outshot Wofford five to three, but neither team managed to get a shot on goal as seven out of the eight total shots were well over the crossbar. The only competitive shot from either team in the half came from Terriers forward
Samuel Byron, who barely missed wide on a laser in the 42nd minute.
Second Half
In the second half, both teams started to get into more of a rhythm and began to create meaningful opportunities both ways. Wofford subbed on forward
Declan Mettee, who started off the half by immediately firing off two shots within the first five minutes and forcing a save from the ETSU goalkeeper. In the 58th minute,
Sam Case drew a penalty kick when he was fouled on a run in the ETSU box. Senior midfielder
Fabian Menendez knocked it home for a goal, putting Wofford up 1-0. After the goal, both the Terriers and the Buccaneers started to go back and forth, with both sides creating chances, but failing to finish. Finally, in the 86th minute, ETSU's Jaime Carillo put home a goal that tied the game. Neither side was able to score in the final four minutes, and the game ended 1-1.
