Men’s Soccer Falls to UNC Asheville in First Loss of the Season

ASHEVILLE, N.C. -- The Wofford men's soccer team lost 1-0 to UNC Asheville on Tuesday night at Greenwood Soccer Field after allowing the game's only goal in the opening seconds of the match. The game marked Wofford's first loss of the season and ended a three-game winning streak and a four-game unbeaten streak.

First Half

In the first minute of the game, UNC Asheville's Orthodoxos Orthodoxou scored to put Wofford down 1-0 early. After the goal, the Terriers started to push the pace and create chances, with shots from Lennart Niederländer and Fabian Menendez forcing saves from the Asheville goalkeeper. In the 43rd minute, Henry Boner drew a foul in the Bulldogs' box that resulted in a red card for Asheville and a penalty kick for Wofford, but the Terriers were unable to take advantage of the opportunity.

Second Half

The Terriers came out of the half playing similarly to how they ended it, controlling possession and creating more chances than Asheville. Clemen's Astrup and Bear Rice both provided shots on goal for the Terriers in the 70th and 84th minutes, but the Asheville goalie managed to save both attempts. In the 85th minute, sophomore Niklas Hegle checked into the game for his season debut and had a shot in the final minutes of the game, but that attempt was also saved. Overall, Wofford had a 17-to-7 advantage in shots.
