History of The Beacon Iced Tea BowlIn 1998, co-owners of The World Famous Beacon Drive-In in Spartanburg, Sam Maw (Wofford graduate) and Steve McManus (graduate of The Citadel) made a friendly wager. The person whose team lost the game would have to don a cheerleading uniform and serve Beacon Iced Tea at the restaurant the following Monday. For the first Iced Tea Bowl, The Citadel won 20-14 and Maw donned the Citadel cheerleading uniform on Monday and the Beacon Iced Tea Bowl was born. While they never donned a cheerleading uniform after the first game, the spirit of the rivalry lives on better than ever.
It has now become a tradition for every Citadel-Wofford football game in Spartanburg to be dubbed the “Iced Tea Bowl.”
Just why is it called the "Iced Tea Bowl"? Because The Beacon serves more
iced tea than any other single restaurant entity in the USA.
The Iced Tea Bowl returns for its 9th installment on Saturday, October 4 at 1:30 pm. The game will be televised on ESPN3 and it will be Family Weeknd on campus.
Commemorative t-shirts bearing the game logo (similar to the photo shown from 2012) are now on-sale at the Wofford Athletic Ticket office inside the Richardson Building or by calling (864) 597-4090. T-shirts are $15.
