James N. Buddy Kirby
Mr. James “Buddy” Kirby ’61 continues to be an incredibly generous asset to Wofford College, and his support has been constant since his graduation in 1961. Before attending Wofford, Mr. Kirby served in the Navy for several years, but after his military service, he enrolled in Wofford and his support of the athletics program has never waned. After graduating from Wofford, Mr. Kirby went on to earn a master’s degree in hospital administration from Duke University. He has worked in various hospitals across South Carolina before founding his own national medical-record coding firm in 1980, selling the firm in 2000. Almost immediately after the sale of his firm, the Kirbys started their endowed scholarship fund.
Mr. Kirby currently serves on the Terrier Club Board of Directors, and with the sale of the firm in 2000, the Kirbys started their endowed scholarship fund. The James N. and Shirley T. Kirby Endowed Scholarship Fund is awarded to an outstanding student-athlete who exemplifies the highest qualities of character and work ethic, and who also have an interest in business and entrepreneurship.
