Allen Clark, Sr.

Allen O. Clark, Sr. ’50 played for the famed 1949 Wofford Terrier football squad, and his legacy at Wofford has been a continued blessing to the College. Clark, Sr., a four-year letterman in football and baseball, went on to become the first assistant principal of Spartanburg’s Paul M. Dorman High School when it opened in 1963. In 1967, he became principal, a post that he held for more than 11 years. Later, he was the superintendent in Spartanburg County School District 6. As stated by Mr. Ralph D. Cannon, past principal of Dorman High School, “Mr. Clark was a man of stature…His effective leadership and his perceptive vision [were] instrumental in making Dorman High School one of the best schools in the state. Ever aware of the trends in society and of the affairs of the nation, he continually sought to alert students and faculty to see the total picture.” His legacy has continued at Wofford through his son and grandson, Al Clark, Jr. ’76 and Al Clark, III ’01.

The Allen O. Clark Memorial Scholarship Fund was established in 1980 in memory of Mr. Clark, Sr., and in 1986, became fully endowed through the continued contributions of Mrs. Clark. The scholarship is awarded to student-athletes in the football program who demonstrate outstanding character and leadership.
