John Cary/James Fowler

John Cary Fowler ’20 was a firm believer in Wofford College and its mission to give quality students a good education. A member of the Wofford track team when he attended, Mr. Fowler had strong feelings and placed a high value on receiving a good education. Wofford College meant a great deal to him, and he took his experiences and education at Wofford into teaching, later becoming the Postmaster of Gaffney, SC. In 1989, John Cary Fowler’s sons, James R. Fowler ’52 and John W. Fowler, along with his grandson, James R. Fowler, Jr. ’82, established the John Cary ’20 and Lilage Castles Fowler Endowed Scholarship Fund.

In 1994, James R. Fowler ’52 passed away and was added to the Fund. James R. Fowler ’52 had a greatly successful career in banking after his graduation from Wofford. When he retired, James R. Fowler was the President of Capital Bank and Trust in Belton, S.C. The John Cary ’20, Lilage Castles, and James R. Fowler ’52 Endowed Scholarship Fund is awarded to members of the intercollegiate football team.
