Seth Cutler-Voltz is in his sixth season as the pitching coach for the Wofford baseball team. In the first seven years of his coaching career he has had seven pitchers reach the professional ranks, highlighted by Adam Scott, a 4th round pick of the Cleveland Indians, Hayes Heinecke (13rd round by the St. Louis Cardinals) and Daniel Concepcion (12th round by the Kansas City Royals). In the summer of 2021 he took on recruiting coordinator responsibilities.

The 2021 season ended with Wofford winning the first regular season Southern Conference Championship in school history. The team was 36-21 overall and 21-9 in league play, which were the most conference wins in school history. Elliot Carney was named the Southern Conference Pitcher of the Year and earned first team All-Conference honors, while Dalton Rhadans was first team All-Conference as a relief pitcher. They were joined by Colin Davis (SoCon Player of the Year), Jack Renwick, Lawson Hill and Nolen Hester earned league honors. Renwick and Trey Yunger were named to the All-Freshman Team. The Terriers had a 5.01 ERA that was third in the Southern Conference and the .259 opposing batting average ranked first. The team combined for 492 strikeouts, which was second in the league and tied for the third-most in school history.

During the 2020 season, the team was 14-3 overall before the campaign was cut short. The Terriers had a 3.12 ERA which ranked fourth in the Southern Conference, and the 152 strikeouts were second in the league.

In 2019 Wofford won 36 games, tied for the second-most in school history. The 14-9 record in the Southern Conference to finish second overall, the highest in school history. In the Southern Conference Tournament, Wofford reached the championship series for the second time in school history before falling to Mercer. Seven Terriers earned All-Southern Conference honors, highlighted by Hayes Heinecke being named Freshman of the Year. Heinecke, Brett Rodriguez, John Dempsey, Hudson Byorick, Colin Davis and Mike Brown were named All-SoCon, with Heinecke, Dempsey and Matty Brown earning All-Freshman Team recognition. Heinecke and Dempsey added Collegiate Baseball Freshman All-America honors. The pitching staff posted an ERA of 4.27, which ranked fourth in the SoCon and was the lowest for the Terriers since 1983. The 492 strikeouts for the staff were the third-most in school history.

During the 2018 season the team posted a 36-23 overall record, the second-most wins in school history. In Southern Conference play, the Terriers were 15-9 to finish third overall and set a new school record for league wins. The pitching staff had an ERA of 4.95 to rank fourth in the SoCon and the 454 strikeouts also ranked fourth. One key to the success of the staff was senior Adam Scott, who was drafted in the 4th round (133rd overall) by the Cleveland Indians. Scott set a new school record with 137 strikeouts (first in the SoCon) in 103.1 innings. He posted a 3.14 ERA and issued only 18 walks on the way to being named All-Southern Conference second team. For his career, he set school records with 364.2 innings pitched and 389 career strikeouts, while ranking second in school history with 26 wins. Scott is ranked third in SoCon history with 389 strikeouts.

In his first year with the Terriers the team won 28 games overall and were 13-11 in the Southern Conference, the second winning season in league play in school history. He led the pitching staff to an ERA of 5.42, which was ranked fifth in the Southern Conference, and 403 strikeouts. Adam Scott was third in the league in strikeouts with 108, the third most in a single season in school history. Spencer Kulman led the team in wins with eight and signed a free agent contract with the San Diego Padres. Matt Ellmyer was named to the Southern Conference All-Freshman Team.

Cutler-Voltz was a vital member of the Skyhawks’ vast improvement in 2015 and 2016 as UT Martin amassed 18 Ohio Valley Conference wins. The Skyhawks won 19 games in 2016 (the most for the program since 2011), one year after notching their first win over a ranked opponent since 2009 with a 6-2 win over No. 15 Missouri State on April 7, 2015.

During the 2016 season, Cutler-Voltz’s pitching staff struck out 369 batters, setting a new program record. He worked with Alex Evans, who accounted for eight wins in 2016. Cutler-Voltz also coached Patrick Bernard, the program’s all-time saves leader, and Jackson Zarubin who signed as a free agent with the Los Angeles Angels.

In 2015, Cutler-Voltz coached Dillon Symon, who became only the fourth pitcher in school history to earn OVC All-Freshman accolades and Bernard, who set the program’s single season and career record for saves with eight.

Prior to his appointment at UT Martin, Cutler-Voltz spent two seasons as a volunteer assistant at his alma mater, VCU. He took over the day-to-day pitching operations for the Rams, who posted a 65-46 overall record in his two years on the coaching staff.

Working under head coach Shawn Stiffler, Cutler-Voltz helped guide the Rams to a memorable year in 2014. VCU began the season with a 20-5 record with victories over future NCAA Tournament teams Georgia Tech, East Carolina and Old Dominion. The Rams surged into the Baseball America top-25 polls and ended the season with a 37-20 record, the most wins for the program since 2007. VCU was only one win away from a berth in the NCAA Regionals, as the Rams fell 3-2 in 10 innings to George Mason in the A-10 championship game.

The VCU pitching staff posted a stellar 3.86 staff ERA under Cutler-Voltz’s instruction in 2014, allowing less than a hit per inning (.259 opponent batting average). The Rams posted similar numbers under Cutler-Voltz in 2013, piecing together a 3.87 team ERA to go along with a .274 opponent batting average. One of his pitchers, Seth Greene, led the A-10 and ranked 10th in the nation in fewest walks allowed per nine innings (1.05) in 2013. During his coaching stint at VCU, Cutler-Voltz helped develop Daniel Concepcion who was drafted by the Kansas City Royals in the 12th round, while Matt Lees and Heath Dwyer both signed as free agents with the Arizona Diamondbacks.

Cutler-Voltz’s successful start to his coaching career followed a remarkable four-year playing career for Stiffler and the late head coach Paul Keyes at VCU. He ranked second in career innings pitched (338.1), fourth in career games started (47), ninth in career strikeouts (229) and 10th in career appearances (73). He won 18 games with a 4.31 career ERA while posting nearly a 3:1 strikeout-to-walk ratio (229 strikeouts against 77 walks).

A Richmond, Va. native, Cutler-Voltz was a four-year standout for Henrico High School. He was a three-year all-district selection while earning Player of the Year accolades in the Capitol District in 2007, the same year he helped guide the Warriors to the Capitol District tournament championship. He was inducted into the Henrico High School Athletic Hall of Fame in 2019.

Cutler-Voltz graduated from VCU with a degree in exercise science in 2012. He also obtained his Master’s degree from VCU.
