Joanna Tincher

Assistant coach Joanna Tincher began her first year with the Terriers in July 2015 after previously serving as an assistant coach at Newberry College for three seasons.

Starting in the 2012-13 season, Tincher helped the Newberry program to winning seasons in all three years on staff, including a SAC championship and NCAA Division II Tournament appearance in 2015. As an assistant, Tincher played a crucial role in recruiting, scouting and game plan development while also devising and overseeing pre and post season workouts. She also helped ensure compliance and made team travel arrangements. She coached two All-American’s, two First-Team All-Conference Players, one Second-Team All-Conference Player and one All-Freshman Team player during her tenure at Newberry.

Tincher is no stranger to the Spartanburg area either. She served as the head coach at Converse College from 2008 to 2012 where she oversaw all day-to-day operations for the program. She coached two 1,000 point scorers while at Converse and one Third Team All-Conference Selection. She also had two of her players selected into the WBCA “So You Want to Be A Coach” Program under her watch. Outside of basketball duties, she also oversaw the Intramural and Fitness Programs for the college, managed student workers for the weight room and was the on-site game manager for the Valkyries' other sports.

Coach Tincher also has experience at the international professional level both as a player and coach. She played with the Italian team Nuoro Lokomotiv from October 2007 to July 2008, contributing to a team that was a national runner-up finish. She also helped coach the organization’s U15 and U18 teams, where she would run practices for the two teams.

Coach Tincher started her coaching career at the University of Alabama-Huntsville in 2004. She served as an assistant for the Chargers for three seasons, playing an instrumental role in recruiting, workout development, team clinics and camps and team travel arrangements.

Tincher was a four-year letterwinner at Francis Marion University as a forward/center, where she received the team’s Most Valuable Player Award her senior season. During that season, she averaged 10.0 points, 6.8 rebounds, 1.4 assists, 1.2 blocks and 1.7 steals while leading the team in rebounding. She was also part of Francis Marion’s 2001 run to the NCAA Division II Sweet 16. She played in 97 of her team’s 115 games during her four seasons.

Tincher graduated from Francis Marion in May 2004 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in psychology and a minor in Spanish. She was also named to the 2001 PBC Presidential Honor Roll and 2002 FMU Swamp Fox Athletic-Academic Honor Roll.

A native of Bedford, Ind., Tincher currently lives in Boiling Springs, S.C., with her catahoula leopard dog, Trace.
