CHARLESTON, S.C. – The Wofford College baseball team was defeated 8-2 by the College of Charleston at Patriots Points on Friday night. The Terriers had nine hits in the game, but a five-run second inning by the Cougars was the difference in the contest.
Wofford is 11-22 on the season and 4-9 in the SoCon, while the College of Charleston is 25-11 overall and 10-6 in conference play. The Terriers were led by James Foster, Alex Lee and Kyle Behrendt with two hits each. The Cougars were led by Matt Leeds with two hits and three RBIs.
The Terriers got on the board in the top of the first with back-to-back doubles from Alex Lee and Mac Doyle for a 1-0 lead. In the bottom half of the inning, a double to right by Matt Leeds scored two runs for the Cougars. The College of Charleston added two runs in the bottom of the second when Cole Rakar hit a double down the left field line. A single from Rob Kral drove in Rakar for a 5-1 advantage. Matt Leeds added an RBI double to left center and a fielder’s choice by Baker Knox brought home a run as the Cougars were up 7-1 after two complete.
After a scoreless third, Kyle Behrendt led-off the top of the fourth with a double to left field. With one out, David Roney reached on an error that moved Behrendt to third, however a double play ended the Wofford half of the inning.
In the top of the fifth, Matt Moore singled and stole second. A single by James Foster moved Moore to third and Foster stole second as well to give Wofford two runners in scoring position with one out. A sacrifice fly to left field by Alex Lee scored Moore to make it a 7-2 game.
The Cougars added a run on an RBI single from Kolby Epley in the bottom of the fifth. Neither team scored in the sixth inning, but both teams left one on base. In the top of the seventh, the Terriers added two singles from James Foster and Alex Lee but two runners were left on base.
Wofford opened the top of the eighth with a double by Kyle Behrendt to right center and he moved to third on a ground-out, but was left on base. The Cougars had two runners left on base in the bottom of the eighth. In the top of the ninth, Wofford had one runner reach base, but the game ended with an 8-2 final score.
For the Terriers, starter Tom Dolinak (0-3) threw seven innings and allowed eleven hits and eight runs, seven of which were earned, and had six strikeouts. Alex Wilson struck out two and allowed one hit in the eighth inning.
College of Charleston starter Christian Powell (5-2) went 6.1 innings with six hits and two runs allowed along with eight strikeouts. Josh Salay allowed three hits with three strikeouts in 1.2 innings. Cameron Holmes did not allow a hit in the ninth.
Wofford continues the three-game series at the College of Charleston on Saturday night at 7:00 p.m., which is a time change due to the Blue Angels performance on Saturday afternoon in the Charleston Harbor. The next home game will be Wednesday, April 21 at 7:00 p.m. against Gardner-Webb.
