CHARLESTON, S.C. – The Wofford College baseball team had six hits, but were defeated 3-0 by the College of Charleston at Patriots Points on Sunday afternoon. Pitcher David Peterson had a complete game shutout for the Cougars as they swept the weekend series against the Terriers.
Wofford is 11-24 on the season and 4-11 in the SoCon, while the College of Charleston is 27-11 overall and 12-6 in conference play. The Terriers were led by Kyle Behrendt with three of the six hits on the day. The Cougars were led by Greg Blake with two RBIs and one hit.
Both teams were retired in order in the first inning. In the top of the second, Landon Bennett tripled with one out, but was left on base. The Cougars got on the board in the bottom of the second with an RBI single from Greg Blake.
Each team added a hit in the third inning, however both teams left one runner on base. In the top of the fourth, Kyle Behrendt led-off with a double and a single by Mac Doyle gave the Terriers runners on the corners, but a double play and fly ball ended the scoring chance.
In the top of the fifth, Wofford left two on base with runners reaching on an error and a walk. The Cougars left two runners on base in their half of the fifth. Kyle Behrendt opened the top of the sixth with a single and he stole second. A walk gave the Terriers two on base, but both were stranded at the end of the inning.
The Cougars opened the bottom of the sixth with a double by Rob Kral. He moved to third on a fly ball and scored on a single by Jose Rodriguez to make it a 2-0 game. A walk and error loaded the bases with one out for the College of Charleston. A sacrifice fly by Greg Blake brought in one run to make it 3-0. The Cougars added one more hit in the inning, but left two on base.
Wofford had a triple from Kyle Behrendt with one out in the top of the eighth, however he was left one base. The Cougars added a hit in the bottom of the eighth, but did not add any runs. The Terriers went down in order in the top of the ninth for the 3-0 final score.
For the Terriers, starter John Cornely (2-6) threw six innings with seven hits allowed and three runs scored along with five strikeouts. Cash Collins went 1.2 innings with one hit allowed and two strikeouts. Ryan Traylor picked up the final out for the Terriers in the eighth.
College of Charleston starter David Peterson (5-2) went the complete game with only six hits allowed with eight strikeouts.
Wofford will return home on Wednesday, April 21 at 7:00 p.m. for a game against Gardner-Webb before heading to UNC Greensboro on Friday for the start of a three-game conference series.
