BOONE, N.C. – The Wofford College men’s basketball team lost 83-55 to Appalachian State on Monday night at the Holmes Center. The Mountaineers used a 12-0 run in the second half to pull away in the second half.
Wofford is 14-11 overall and 7-8 in SoCon play. Appalachian State is 15-8 overall and 10-5 in conference play. The Terriers were led by Drew Gibson with 13 points and Noah Dahlman with seven rebounds. The Mountaineers were led by Donte Minter with 24 points and Ryann Abraham with 13 points. Jeremy Clayton had seven rebounds.
“We were not willing to do the things necessary to get things done tonight,” said Wofford head coach Mike Young. “Appalachian State was very good and we were bad tonight. I am pretty disappointed with our bunch. We have a lot on the line and are in uncharted territory and did not handle it well tonight. They beat us start to finish tonight. We need to get things figured out in practice the next couple of days and get ready for Georgia Southern.”
The game was tied early at 4-4, but the Mountaineers quickly built a 12-6 lead at the 12:35 mark. A three-pointer by Junior Salters, followed by a lay-up by Noah Dahlman pulled the Terriers to within one at 12-11 at 11:42. A Shane Nichols basket and foul shot tied the game at 18-18 with 7:49 on the clock.
The Mountaineers built a five point lead, but the Terriers again pulled within one at 24-23 at 4:59. With 3:40 on the clock, Wofford was two points down at 27-25. The Mountaineers then went on an 11-0 run, which included eight points by Donte Minter. Drew Gibson ended the run with a basket to make it 38-29 with 42 seconds left, but another bucket by Minter closed the half. Appalachian State outscored Wofford 13-2 in the last 3:20 of the half to take a 40-29 lead at the break.
In the second half, Wofford scored the first three points to cut the lead to eight at 40-32. After a Shane Nichols three-pointer at 15:51, the Mountaineers had a 47-38 lead. Another run by Appalachian State, this time 7-0, ran the lead to 54-38 at 13:43. The Terriers scored a three by Shane Nichols and a lay-up from Noah Dahlman to make it 54-43 at the 12:25 mark.
Four straight free throws by Drew Gibson cut the Mountaineer lead to nine points at 58-49 at 9:12. But once again, a run by Appalachian State ended the Terriers chances. The Mountaineers reeled off twelve straight points to go up 70-49 before Corey Godzinski hit a three to end the run with 5:30 left in the game. The Mountaineers outscored the Terriers 8-2 over the last 4:20 of the game to take the 83-55 win.
Wofford shot 32.8% from the floor and 27.8% from three. The Terriers were 60.0% from the line. The Mountaineers were 53.4% from the floor and 50.0% from behind the arc and 66.7% from the free throw line. The Terriers had a 41-35 edge on rebounds.
The Terriers have now dropped their last two conference games. Marcus Jackson (shoulder) was the only Terrier who did not dress for the contest; all twelve players dressed played for Wofford.
Wofford returns home on Thursday, February 14 against Georgia Southern. The Terriers will face Furman on Monday, February 18 at Timmons Arena.
