Men’s Soccer Advances With 3-1 Win Over UNCG

SPARTANBURG, SC – The Wofford College men’s soccer team advanced to the finals of the Southern Conference Tournament with a 3-1 win over UNC Greensboro on Friday night at Snyder Field. Wilson Hood scored the first two goals for the Terriers.

Wofford moves to 11-2-3 overall, while UNC Greensboro’s season send at 6-10-3. The Terriers had a twelve to five lead on shots.

The Terriers had the first shot of the game just three minutes into play by Armin Kinigadner. At 9:41, Wofford got on the board first when Kentrel Owens drew the goalie to the right side of the box then crossed to Wilson Hood who chipped the ball into the center of the net from seven yards out.

Wofford added a second goal at 12:26 when Branson Hyatt crossed the ball into the box from the right side and Wilson Hood headed the ball into the net to take a 2-0 lead. The Terriers kept up the offensive pressure and had the first eight shots of the game before Jamel Johnson had a shot go wide right of the net with 1:45 left in the half.

In the second half, the Spartans wasted little time in scoring when Matt Shrine was assisted by Cruz Oronos at 50:37 on a shot to the left corner of the net from ten yards out. The momentum swung to the Spartans who continued to get looks at the goal. At 70:26, Denny Mask had a header that was saved by Thomas Hunter. Wofford added a third goal at 83:53 when Wilson Hood crossed the ball in and Yakov Rubinchik placed the ball in the top center of the net. The Terriers held the ball for the final six minutes for the win.

For the Terriers, goalie Thomas Hunter made two saves and had one goal against. In goal for the Spartans, Peyton Ford had three saves and three goals against. UNC Greensboro had an 18 to seven lead in fouls and E.J. O’Keeffe had a yellow card and A.J. Nelson received a red card.

The win was the first for Wofford in SoCon Tournament play (1-11 all-time) and the goal by Wilson Hood in the first half was the first goal scored in Tournament play by the Terriers.

The Terriers advance to the Southern Conference Championship game for the first time in school history. Wofford will face Elon at 2:00 on Sunday afternoon at Snyder Field. Tickets are $3 for children and $5 for adults.
