SPARTANBURG, S.C. -- The Wofford women's basketball team used a 13-0 run to close out the game, but a three-pointer with six seconds left missed the mark and the Terriers were defeated 58-56 by Georgia Southern on Saturday afternoon at Benjamin Johnson Arena.

The Terriers opened the game with a 7-0 run, and although the Eagles got within three points more than once, Wofford was able to hold onto the lead until the 11:42 mark when a layup from Janay Wilson tied the score at 12. Georgia Southern took its first lead of the game at 9:38 off two good free throws from Briana Scott, but the Terriers quickly rebuilt a five-point lead.

The first half saw five more tied scores before Georgia Southern managed a two-point lead off a layup from Wilson with 27 seconds remaining. A Terrier missed three-pointer left the score at 35-37 at halftime.

Neither team scored in the first two minutes of the second half, and a layup from Kelly Dwyer put the first points on the board, tying the score at 37. After a brief Terrier lead at 39-38, Georgia Southern went on a 13-0 run, taking a 52-39 lead with 12 minutes remaining in the game. The Eagles would lead by as many as 16 points before Wofford responded with a 13-point run of their own, but the effort fell short as the Terriers did not connect on a final shot, falling 56-58.

Carolyn Whitney paced the Eagles with 15 points while J’Lisia Ogburn, Jamie Navarro and Janay Wilson each added eight.

Senior Natalie Gramblin led the Terriers with 13 points and Kelly Dwyer contributed 12 points and six steals. Junior Mahagony Williams paced the team with six rebounds and four blocks.

With the win, Georgia Southern improves to 9-8 overall and evens its Southern Conference record at 4-4 while the Terriers fall to 2-13 overall and 1-7 in league play. Wofford will hit the road on Monday, January 18 as they travel to Elon to take on the Phoenix. Tip off is set for 7:00 p.m.
