Wofford vs. Appalachian State Box Score

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – In a game originally scheduled to be played in Boone, N.C. but moved to Spartanburg due to inclement weather, the Wofford women’s basketball game fell to visiting Appalachian State by a score of 62-54.

The Terriers opened the game with a 10-2 run in the first three minutes of play. A Mountaineer layup cut the Wofford lead to six points, but sophomore April Moorhouse answered with a two-pointer to push the score to 12-4.

Wofford was able to maintain its lead until the 8:27 mark, when a three-pointer from Appalachian State’s Anna Freeman evened the score at 14. The tie would be the closest the Mountaineers would come in the first half, however, as a Moorhouse jumper gave the Terriers the lead again. Wofford would lead by as many as eight points before heading into half time with a 26-22 lead.

Appalachian State opened the second half with a quick score, followed by a second layup to tie the score at 26. The next eight minutes of play saw five additional tied scores and seven lead changes leading to a tie at 39 with 10:55 remaining. Appalachian State strung together a seven-point run before a free throw shot from senior Natalie Gramblin cut the lead to six.

A Mountaineer layup at the 5:55 mark followed by a made free throw shot at 4:12 gave the Mountaineers a nine-point lead. Wofford responded with two points from Kathlyn Varno and a pair of three-pointers from Rachel Brittenham and Kristin Bradley to bring the score to 50-51 with 2:32 remaining. Appalachian State turned up its defense and held the Terriers scoreless while racking up seven straight points to secure a 58-50 lead with 50 seconds remaining, on the way to a 62-54 victory.

Junior Sam Ramirez led the Mountaineers with 14 points, while freshman Anna Freeman and sophomore Catherine Williams each recorded a double-double. Freeman scored 11 points and grabbed 14 rebounds while Williams added 10 points and grabbed 11 boards in the win.

The Terriers were led by sophomore April Moorhouse, who matched her career high 14 points and added six rebounds. Freshman Rachel Brittenham and senior Natalie Gramblin each recorded 11 points, and junior Mahagony Williams paced the team with seven rebounds.

With the win, Appalachian State improves to 11-9 overall and 7-4 in Southern Conference play while Wofford falls to 4-16 on the season and 2-10 in league play. Wofford will host Davidson on Tuesday, February 2 in a 6:00 p.m. matchup in Benjamin Johnson Arena.
