Men’s Basketball Defeats Elon 72-56

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Wofford men’s basketball team built an eleven point lead at the half on the way to a 72-56 Southern Conference win over Elon at Benjamin Johnson Arena on Wednesday night. The Terriers were outshot in the game, but had the edge in rebounds and turnovers for the victory.

Wofford is 16-8 on the season and 8-3 in the SoCon, while Elon is 4-17 overall and 2-8 in the conference. The Terriers were led by Jamar Diggs with a season-high 19 points, Noah Dahlman with 16 points and Tim Johnson with 14 rebounds. For the Phoenix, Adam Constantine had 17 points and T.J. Douglas added eleven points.

“I thought we did some things better tonight than we did on Saturday,” said head coach Mike Young. “I thought Jamar Diggs was terrific. It was another nice team effort and another league win. We are coming on and getting better.”

The Terriers opened the scoring with a lay-up and free throw by Noah Dahlman, but the game was tied at eight after a three by Drew Spradlin at 16:22. Wofford took a four-point lead at 14-10 with a Tim Johnson lay-up, but the Phoenix scored the next five points to take a 15-14 lead at the ten-minute mark. A free throw by Jamar Diggs and a Diggs three gave Wofford an 18-15 lead with 9:09 on the clock and the Terriers would not trail again in the game.

Another three by Jamar Diggs pushed the lead to 22-17 less than a minute later. Elon was able to get within two points at 27-25 with 4:01 left in the first half, but the Terriers went on a 9-0 run to end the half and took a 36-25 lead at the break.

Elon scored on two free throws to open the second half, but Wofford had a 39-27 lead at the 16:48 mark as both teams struggled early from the floor. At 13:28, Wofford was able to take a 44-32 lead after a three by Jason Dawson, but it was matched by Elon’s T.J. Douglas. The Phoenix got to within eight points with twelve minutes to play at 46-38, but Wofford quickly had the lead up to sixteen points at 55-39 with nine minutes on the clock.

Over the next four minutes the Phoenix chipped away at the Wofford lead and cut it to eight points at 62-54 with 4:21 on the clock. The Terriers then used a 9-0 run to put the game out of reach at 71-54 with only thirty seconds left. Wofford scored the final point for a 72-56 win.

Wofford shot 44.4% from the floor and were 26.7% from three. From the free throw line, the Terriers were 62.5%. Elon was 48.8% overall and were 41.7% from behind the arc. They were 56.3% from the line. Wofford led on the glass 37 to 28. Elon had 17 turnovers, while Wofford only had eight.

With the victory, the Terriers have 16 wins on the season which ties the school NCAA Division I record which was set the last two seasons. Noah Dahlman scored in double-figures for the 24th time this season. Wofford has won nine of their last ten games. Brad Loesing did not have a turnover for the third straight game. Tim Johnson had 14 rebounds, his sixth game with season with ten or more.

The Terriers will complete a four-game home stand on Saturday night at 7:00 pm when Wofford hosts UNC Greensboro.
