Men’s Basketball Falls 77-73 To College of Charleston

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – On Saturday night, the Wofford men’s basketball team was defeated 77-73 by the College of Charleston at Benjamin Johnson Arena. The game was tied with 11:47 left in the game and the Cougars won a back-and-forth battle down the stretch for the victory.

Wofford is 6-9 on the season and 3-1 in the Southern Conference and the College of Charleston is 11-5 overall and 4-0 in SoCon play. The Terriers were led by with Noah Dahlman with 25 points and eleven rebounds for his second double-double of the season. Jamar Diggs added 23 points for Wofford. The Cougars were led by Andrew Goudelock with 18 points and Willis Hall with eleven rebounds.

“The College of Charleston was a little bit better than us tonight,” said head coach Mike Young. “I thought we were better tonight than we were Thursday. We are going to continue to get a little bit better each game. We are going to be fine and we are getting there. The Cougars played better than us and they deserved it. I liked out grit tonight.”

The Cougars were able to take an early 5-0 lead and had a seven-point advantage at 12-5 four minutes into the game. Wofford was able to go on a 6-0 run to make it a one point game just 90 seconds later. However at the 11:34 mark, the Cougars hit a three to push the lead back to nine at 25-16. The College of Charleston had a 34-26 lead with 5:08 on the clock, but the Terriers had seven straight points by Jamar Diggs to cut the lead to one at 34-33 with 3:08 left in the half. At the break, the Cougars had a 43-39 advantage.

Wofford scored first with a lay-up by Noah Dahlman to open the second half. At the 15:15 mark, the score was tied at 49 after another lay-up by Dahlman and he added a free throw for the Terriers first lead of the night. Jamar Diggs had two free throws at 13:48, which gave Wofford a 52-51 lead.

College of Charleston broke a tie at 53 with a three pointer. Wofford kept the game within a possession for the next four minutes. The Cougars were able to build a seven-point lead at 70-63 with 3:05 left on the clock. The Terriers used a 8-2 run that included four points by Cameron Rundles and two each by Dahlman and Diggs to make it a 72-71 game with just 13 seconds on the clock. The squads traded free throws but the Cougars had a 76-73 lead with five seconds remaining. Wofford had a chance at a three, but it was rebounded by the Cougars and they added a foul shot for the 77-73 final score.

Wofford shot a 44.4% from the floor and were 23.1% from three. From the free throw line, the Terriers were 75.9%. The College of Charleston was 50.9% overall and were 43.8% from behind the arc. They were 76.2% from the line. The Cougars had a 31-28 lead in rebounds. Wofford had won 13 straight conference games prior to the loss.

The Terriers hit the road next week for a contest on Wednesday, January 12 at Georgia Southern and then will face Davidson on Saturday, January 15 in Davidson, N.C. Wofford returns home on January 20 against Chattanooga.
