Men’s Soccer Scores Five in Rout of UNCG, 5-1

Box Score SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Five different Terriers found the back of the net as the Wofford men's soccer team defeated the UNCG Spartans, 5-1 in Southern Conference play.

With the win, the Terriers improve to 8-5-1 overall and hold their first place spot in the Southern Conference with a record of 4-1. The Spartans fall to 7-6-2 overall and 2-1-1 in the Southern Conference.

In the first half, Wofford opened the scoring in the seventh minute when sophomore midfielder Connor Davis scored his team-leading ninth goal of the season off of a long throw in from senior defender Billy Padula putting the team up 1-0.

The Terriers would continue the pressure creating multiple opportunities over the next several minutes. Sophomore midfielder Nestor Jaramillo had a great chance to extend the lead in the 24th minute when his shot was saved by UNCG goalkeeper Stephen Moffitt.

Freshman forward Matthew Aurednik would make the score 2-0 in the 33rd minute, when he stole a bad back-pass in the defense and capitalized for his fourth goal of the season.

The Spartans would create their first chance of the half in the 34th minute when Noah DeAngelo had a header shot saved by Wofford's freshman goalkeeper Garrett Closs.

The Terriers would close the half with a third goal in the 40th minute when Padula's long throw in found junior defender Forrest Lasso, who headed the ball into the goal for his fifth of the season making the score at the half 3-0.

Padula's assist gave him nine for the season, breaking the Wofford record for assists in a single season for the Division I era starting in 1995. He owned the record last season with eight.

In the second half, UNCG created a couple of good opportunities, the best coming in the 51st minute when David Reittinger had a shot miss wide of the goal.

Wofford would create the first great opportunity of the half when Jaramillo had a shot saved by UNCG's second goalkeeper Davis Griffin in the 54th minute.

Junior forward Matt Frongello would score the fourth Terrier goal of the match in the 70th minute when he received a pass from junior midfielder Pierce Verchick and took a shot with the outside of his foot that found the bottom right corner of the net from 16-yards out.

Ten minutes later, junior forward Benny Puetter hit a screamer one time off a bad pass in the for his first goal of the season in the 80th minute, extending the lead to 5-0.

The Spartans would find a consolation goal in the 89th minute when Andrew Dilley took advantage of a ball in a scramble in the box making the final score 5-1.

For the match, the Terriers outshot UNCG 20-5 while the Spartans won the battle of the corner kicks 3-2.

In goal for Wofford, Closs earned his fifth win of the season facing five UNCG shots and made one save. For the Spartans, Moffitt played the first 45 minutes of the match taking the loss. He faced 11 Terrier shots and made two saves. Griffin played the second 45 minutes facing nine Wofford shots and made three saves.

The Terriers return to the pitch on Wednesday October 30th when they host Presbyterian College in a non-conference matchup at Snyder Field. Kickoff is set for 7:00 pm.
