ATHENS, Ga. – In the season opener for the Wofford College men’s basketball team, the University of Georgia won 72-52 at Stegeman Coliseum. The Bulldogs used a 14-0 run to end the second half to build a 19 point lead that the Terriers could not overcome.
Wofford is 0-1 and Georgia is 1-0 to open the season. The Terriers were led by Spencer Collins with 11 points. Lee Skinner had ten points and a team-high nine rebounds. The Bulldogs had 12 points by Nemanja Djurisic and eleven points from Donte Williams.
“I am not going to make excuses for my guys,” said head coach Mike Young. “I thought Georgia was pretty good. It is not acceptable to be outrebounded by 24, I don’t care who it is. You have to do a better job on the glass than that. I am concerned about only five assists in the game. Assists from only two different players is not who we are. Having said all of that, we have the makings of a good basketball team. I like our pieces and I like them as people and we are going to be just fine.”
The Terriers opened the scoring with a three pointer by John Swinton. After the score was tied at five, Spence Collins made a three for an 8-5 lead after three minutes of play. Georgia scored the next five points to tie the game at ten at the seven minute mark. With the game tied at twelve, the Bulldogs added four points for a 16-12 lead before a jumper by Lee Skinner cut the score to two points with eight minutes remaining in the first half.
A shot by Justin Gordon made it a 20-18 game, but the Bulldogs scored the next five points for a 25-18 advantage with 5:43 left in the first half. C.J. Neumann added a bucket for the Terriers, but Georgia had a 27-20 lead at the four minute mark. The Bulldogs scored the next nine points for a 36-20 advantage with 1:27 remaining. J.J. Frazier added a three for Georgia as they took a 39-20 lead at the break.
Wofford ended the run with a jumper by Spencer Collins to start the second half. However the Bulldogs would push the lead to 50-25 at the 14:46 mark. Karl Cochran would score four of the next five points for the Terriers to cut the score to 50-30 after eight minutes of action. With 7:08 remaining in the game, the Bulldogs had a 55-35 lead before two free throws by Spencer Collins.
The Terriers cut the score to 60-44 after two free throws by Lee Skinner with 4:36 on the clock. A Justin Gordon jumper made it a 62-48 game before Taylor Echols hit a three for the Bulldogs and a 65-48 lead at the 3:44 mark. Georgia pulled away in the final minutes for the 72-52 final score.
Wofford shot 38.0% from the floor while Georgia shot 43.9% overall. The Terriers were 2-of-14 from with three, while the Bulldogs were 2-of-11 from behind the arc. Georgia was 20-of-29 from the line while Wofford was 12-of-18 on free throws. The Bulldogs had a 49 to 24 lead on the glass. Wofford had ten turnovers on the night, while Georgia had nine.
Wofford will open the home slate on Monday night at 7:00 p.m. against Emory and Henry in Benjamin Johnson Arena.
