Georgia Southern Tops Wofford 68-59

SPARTANBURG, S.C. –  Wofford women’s basketball fell 68-59 Saturday afternoon in the Benjamin Johnson Arena to Georgia Southern in a Southern Conference game.
 
Daniella Motley led Wofford with 22 points tying a career-high she sent at Georgia Southern on January 20.  Motley also grabbed a game-high ten rebounds for her eighth double-double of the season.  Rachel Brittenham followed with 12 points giving her 800 for her career. She becomes only the second Terrier in school history with over 800 career points, 400 career assists and 400 career rebounds. 
 
Anna Claire Knight paced the Eagles with a career-high 24 points.  Meredyth Frye followed with 17 points, and Alexis Sams added 11 points.
 
Georgia Southern took a 16-9 lead with 13:26 on the clock on a Mimi DuBose three as part of a 6-0 Eagle run.  Ashton Fleming answered with a basket on the next Wofford possession.
 
The Eagles kept the lead between six and seven points, until Motley scored on a Brittenham assist with 8:43 left before the half to trim the Georgia Southern lead to four points, 18-14. Following an Eagle basket, Brittenham knocked down a three from the wing 30 seconds later to cut the lead to three points, 20-17.
 
A Dubose three extended the Eagle lead to five points, 24-19, at the six-minute mark, but Wofford answered with a jumper from Motley a minute and a half later to keep the lead at three points, 24-21.
 
A Georgia Southern three-point play from Frye took the lead back to six points, 27-21, with just under four minutes left in the half, but Wofford answered with a 5-0 run started by a Fleming layup to trim the lead down to one point, 27-26, with 2:32 on the clock. 
 
The Eagles used a 6-0 run highlighted by two Knight jumpers to close out the half and take a 33-26 lead.
 
Wofford chipped into the lead, 35-30, with four points from Morgan Wrightson, but Georgia Southern took the lead out to 15 points, 49-34, with a 14-4 run highlight by two Sams threes with 12:31 showing on the clock.  Wofford had a three-point by Motley during the run.
 
The Eagles extended the lead out to 18 points, 54-36, following Knight layup a minute later, but Wofford answered with a three from and two free throws from Brittenham to cut the gap down to 13 points, 54-41, with 8:34 remaining in the game.
 
Wofford fought back and trimmed the margin down to nine points, 61-52, following two Motley layups with just under four minutes to play, and again to nine points, 63-54, with 1:42 left in the game. 
 
A Logan Morris three-point play with 1:22 on the clock pulled the Terriers within six points, 63-57, but Knight, Danielle Spencer and Sams all converted free throws for Georgia Southern down the stretch as the Eagles held on for the 68-59 win.
 
Georgia Southern finished at 45 percent mark from the floor, 44 percent from three and 80 percent from the free throw line, while Wofford shot 35 percent overall, 20 percent from three and 54 percent from the charity stripe. 
 
The Eagles outrebounded the Terriers 43-32 including 34-19 on the defensive glass. 
 
Wofford travels to the College of Charleston on Monday, February 25 at 6 p.m. for its next game.
