Volleyball Hits Road Block at ETSU

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. – The Wofford volleyball team lost its first road game of the Southern Conference season and first in 24 days overall, falling to East Tennessee State in three sets (21-25, 17-25, 11-25) Friday night at Brooks Gym.

The best blocking team in the Southern Conference racked up 11 blocks on the young Terriers. Seven of them came in ETSU's 14-point, final-set victory, highlighted by four from senior outside Ivey Rice. Senior blocker Meredith Hardy added to her conference-best 96 blocks with five, matching junior blocker Khadijah Wiley to lead all players. In all, seven different Buccaneers recorded a block.

ETSU's 11 rejections contributed nearly half of Wofford's 24 attack errors. The Terriers finished the match hitting .075, while the Buccaneers hit .375 and were blocked just once.

Rice led the Bucs (9-13, 3-3 SoCon) with a match-high 11 kills and hit .393 with zero attacking errors. Every ETSU attacker hit at least .250 with four hitting .300 or better, combining for just eight attack errors. Senior libero Katie Muey – the two-time reigning SoCon Defensive Player of the Week – completed the evening with a match-high 16 digs.

For Wofford (10-13, 2-4 SoCon), senior Taylor Baird had a team-high nine kills. Freshman Bella Santoro had seven and classmate Alex Holland had six, but no Terrier hit above .200. Freshman Molly Mayo led the night with 24 assists and junior libero Jessica Graham headed the ground effort with 10 digs.

The Terriers hope to end their three-game SoCon losing skid on Saturday. Wofford meets UNCG (11-8, 3-3 SoCon) inside Fleming Gym at 7 p.m.
