Volleyball Swept at Chattanooga

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. — The Wofford volleyball team was swept by Chattanooga (8-25, 21-25, 17-25) Friday night in Southern Conference action at Maclellan Gym.

The Mocs set the tone in a one-sided first set. Chatt hit .524 with four kills apiece from Nicole Sumida and Kristy Wieser. Meanwhile, the Terriers committed 10 attack errors and hit -.217 to suffer their worst set defeat since falling 25-8 at Mississippi State on Sept. 14, 2013.

Chatt controlled the rest of the match, never trailing past the 10-point mark in any set.

The loss locks Wofford (12-20, 4-11 SoCon) as the No. 8 seed in next weekend's Southern Conference Tournament. The Terriers will take on ninth-seeded The Citadel in the first round next Friday at 9:30 a.m., with the winner advancing to face top-seeded Furman later that afternoon.

A bright spot on Friday was senior Taylor Baird, who had a team-high nine kills with no attack errors to hit .360. As a team, the Terriers posted a mark of .099.

Wieser was unstoppable for the Chattanooga (13-17, 6-9 SoCon). She finished the evening hitting .667 with a match-high 11 kills and no attack errors, helping UTC hit .337 as a team. Sarah Batterton had seven kills (.545) and Allie Davenport had nine (.292).

Chatt led 10-5 in the first before putting the set away with an 8-0 run which included a pair of aces from Melissa Green and two kills by Sarah Batterton. Back-to-back kills from Sumida made it 22-7 and a Maddie Marshall ace finished the set.

The second played close, but the Mocs scored four straight to grab a 10-7 lead and never looked back. Santoro got the Terriers within a pair at 11-9 and a Baird kill later on kept Wofford down just two at 19-17. Wieser then began a 3-0 run that put UTC up five and Wofford could not respond, falling behind by two sets.

The Mocs completed the sweep. After the Terriers pulled the third to 13-11, Chatt scored five straight to grab control. Wofford only ever got back within a handful at 21-16 as the home team scored four of the last five to win in three.

The Wofford volleyball team wraps up the regular season Saturday at 3 p.m. ET in Birmingham, Ala. against Samford.
