Volleyball Topped by Western Carolina in Three

CULLOWHEE, N.C. – The Wofford volleyball team was outhit .303 to .129 on its way to a three-set loss at Western Carolina (21-25, 19-25, 21-25) Saturday afternoon at the Ramsey Center.
 
Western Carolina (16-13, 9-6 SoCon) led the first set 21-20 and scored the final four points to go on top. The Catamounts then scored the first five points of the second and never trailed, leading by as many as 13 to take a two-set lead.
 
Wofford (12-19, 4-10 SoCon) led the third 11-9 when WCU used a 7-1 run to grab the lead 16-12. The Terriers hung tough but could not rebound and kills by Addy George and Caitlin Piechota ended the match in three.
 
Wofford senior Taylor Baird and Western senior Piechota each put down a match-high 14 kills. However, Piechota's came with no attacking errors, hitting .438 and tacking on 10 digs for a double-double on her Senior Day.
 
Freshman Danni Densford was the lone Terrier play well on the attack. The rookie middle was good for six kills with no errors on 17 attempts to hit .353. She also added a pair of block solos.
 
Freshman setter Molly Mayo completed her third straight double-double with 28 assists and 11 digs. Junior libero Jessica Graham posted a match-high 14 digs and freshman Jen Espenschied joined in double figures with 10.
 
For the Catamounts, Katie O'Connor had seven kills and hit .417. George, Jordan Timmermann and Jo-Leigh Vervelde chimed in with five apiece. George was lethal on the block, notching eight to help Western outblock Wofford 9-4.
 
The Wofford volleyball team concludes the regular season next Friday and Saturday with matches at Chattanooga and Samford. The Southern Conference Tournament is the following weekend, Nov. 22-24, in Greensboro, N.C.
