ASHEVILLE, N.C. – The ninth-seeded Wofford College women's basketball team begins its quest for a Southern Conference Tournament Championship on Friday, facing off against eighth-seeded Georgia Southern inside Kimmel Arena on the campus of UNC Asheville at 11 a.m.
The Terriers (6-22, 4-14 SoCon) split their two regular-season meetings with Georgia Southern (9-20, 7-11 SoCon). Each team was victorious on their home courts. GSU took a 79-70 game on Dec. 16 in Statesboro, but Wofford avenged itself last Friday in Spartanburg, blowing out the Eagles by a score of 73-49. It marked Wofford's largest margin of victory against a Division I opponent since 2006.
The SoCon Tournament meeting will be the fourth all-time between Wofford and Georgia Southern. The Terriers are 1-2 against the Eagles in tournament history, winning in the 2002 quarterfinals, 73-63, to advance to the semifinals for the first time in program history. GSU defeated the Terriers in the 1998 quarterfinals, and most recently in 2006 first round.
As the No. 9 seed, Wofford is a perfect 4-0 in first-round games, winning in 1998, '99, 2000 and '12. The 2012 victory came over College of Charleston, 64-53.
The winner of Friday's game between Wofford and Georgia Southern advances to the quarterfinals to meet top-seeded Chattanooga (26-3, 18-0 SoCon) on Saturday at noon.
