First Practice Highlights

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Wofford College football team began preparation for the 2014 season with the first day of practice on Monday. The opening session lasted two hours and was held in shorts and helmets.

Wofford reported to campus on Sunday afternoon, with several meetings held on Sunday night. On Monday morning at 6:30 a.m., the team took part in the conditioning test. Following equipment fitting and afternoon meetings, the team took to the soccer practice field for the first practice at 6:00 pm. Most of the practice was spent with position groups, with one segment devoted to kickoff coverage. In skelly, Drake Michaelson and Jaleel Green each came up with interceptions, while Ray Smith caught a touchdown pass.

"It was a great first day of camp," said head coach Mike Ayers. "By no means are we 100%, but there was a lot of effort and a lot of excitement in the kids. I think having 65 guys here during the summer really helped. We had a fitness test this morning and then the practice this evening and the kids did really well. There are a lot of young guys with their heads swimming, but that is to be expected. We had a lot of guys that stepped up and created a real good environment and with that environment I think the younger kids got an idea of what it takes to play Division I football. Our goals are big and the only way that we are going to reach them is every day to pay that price. We hope that tomorrow is a day that can be another building block since we can't afford a step back."

Wofford will practice at 3:30 p.m. on Tuesday in Gibbs Stadium. The team will be in shoulder pads for the first time on Wednesday and move to full pads on Friday.
