JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. – The Buccaneers of East Tennessee State scored three goals to secure a win, 3-0, over the Wofford College women's soccer team at Summers-Taylor Stadium on Sunday evening.
The Bucs would secure the victory in the 81st minute, as Kristi Davis would boot home her fourth goal of the season, putting the Bucs up 3-0. Jasmin Dutton began the break, passing to Simona Koren. Koren sent in a low cross to a sliding Davis, who would knock the ball over Shonte Campbell into the top netting for the goal.
Wofford made improvements on offense, and while unable to score, attempted 10 shots during the game – two more than their past four games combined. The loss drops the Terriers to 3-6 on the season, with a 0-2 mark in conference play.
In the first ten minutes of action the Terriers made multiple runs on goal, but struggled to finish. Freshman midfielder Hannah Washko tried the first shot of the game from 15 yards out but was stopped by ETSU's Jasmine Elliot. A minute later, a dangerous cross from Jordan Burke forced the defense to give up an attempt from the corner, but the Terriers couldn't convert.
The Bucs made an effective run 21 minutes in, leading to their first goal of the match. Hannah Short received a lobbed pass in from Molly Collinson and struck home the ball past Campbell for her 16th goal of the season. Campbell made a diving save 15 minutes later to prevent another Buccaneers goal. The Terriers entered the half relatively even with the Bucs, with both squads earning three shots on goal.
The second half opened with a Wofford attack, as the Terriers earned three corner kicks in five minutes, but were unable to convert any of the chances. The action lulled until the 72nd minute, when Sarah Zadrazil scored her third goal of the season to put the Bucs up 2-0. Davis scored nine minutes later.
The Terriers saw their closest chance to score in the 87th minute, when a header from senior defender Mary Kathryn Macklen hit the post, inches away from a Wofford goal.
Wofford will return home for a five-game home stand, starting on Friday against the new Southern Conference addition Mercer Bears. The match will begin at 6 p.m. at Snyder Field.
