Men's Basketball "Whites Out" Furman, Moves Back into First Place

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Senior Karl Cochran scored a game-high 23 points and became the fourth Terrier in history to accumulate 200 steals, as Wofford earned its largest Southern Conference victory of the season, 74-49, over Furman on Thursday night at Benjamin Johnson Arena.

A sea of Terrier students dressed in white Wofford shirts filled the bleachers from top to bottom behind the home bench. The game was promoted as "White Out Night" at the BenJo and more than 25 percent of the student body showed up in force.

A 22-4 run got the fans excited early and put the game out of reach. Furman led 7-2 at the 17:04 mark until the Terriers scored 12 straight and 22 of the next 26 to take a 24-11 stranglehold with just over nine minutes before the half.

Wofford (15-5, 6-1 SoCon) built its lead to 18 at the break and didn't slow down. The margin reached as many as 28 by shooting 59 percent in the second half. Wofford was stifling on defense as well, holding Furman (5-13, 3-5 SoCon) to 33 percent on the evening.

The win moved the Terriers back into first place in the Southern Conference standings. Both Wofford and Chattanooga are 6-1 in conference play, while Mercer fell to 6-2, losing to Western Carolina, 60-52.

"Just another unbelievable turnout from the student body and the community," Wofford head coach Mike Young commented on the court postgame. "The students supporting this team aren't just Terrier fans – they're friends to the guys on this team. Our guys have relationships with the students in the crowd and see them every day in the classroom and in the cafeteria. It shows such respect that they want to see their classmates succeed, play hard and do the right things. It certainly spurs our guys on."

Cochran shot 8-of-12 from the floor and 6-of-9 from three, adding a game-high seven rebounds and three assists. He sat on 199 steals heading into the night and earned number 200 in the very first minute of the game. The senior went on to finish with two and sits just 12 back of the program's Division I leader, Drew Gibson, who currently serves as Director of Basketball Operations on the staff.

"Karl Cochran is an amazing human being," Young said. "We've still got a long time to go and a lot of things to look forward to with him, but we all know he will go down as one of the very best players that has every come through here, and we've had some great ones. He's a brilliant basketball player and has an incredible basketball mind. I'm awfully proud of him and glad he's a Wofford Terrier."

Juniors Justin Gordon and Spencer Collins joined Cochran in double figures with 14 points apiece. Gordon was 6-of-7 from the field and added five rebounds and three assists, while Collins shot 5-of-10 with a pair of triples and two boards.

Other highlights included the play of freshman Cameron Jackson, who earned a career-high four blocks to tie Cochran for the most in a game this season. All four of them came in just a span of 10 minutes in the second half, also finishing with the same amount of points and rebounds.

"Cam Jackson continues to get better and continues to come into his own as a basketball player," Young added. "He's going to be a great one for our team."
