SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Wofford scored the game's final seven points to grab a late lead and held off VMI, 75-70, Thursday night at Benjamin Johnson Arena.
VMI sophomore Q.J. Peterson put the Keydets in front 70-68 by connecting on two free throws with 1:49 left. Another senior responded, as Wofford's Karl Cochran came down the floor and hit a go-ahead 3-pointer from the left wing.
For the second time this season, a late replay review went in favor of the Terriers. VMI had possession down one when a steal attempt by Cochran forced the ball out of bounds. Officials initially ruled that the ball would stay with VMI, but went to the monitors with 43.1 to go.
After looking at the play for three minutes, head official Jeremy Mosier overturned the call on the floor to grant the Terriers the basketball. Senior John Swinton then hit two at the foul line and played great defense on Peterson's potential game-tying three in the final seconds. The shot glanced off the rim and was rebounded by junior C.J. Neumann, who was fouled and iced away a 3-0 SoCon start for the Terriers.
"That's what you get with a mature team," said Wofford head coach Mike Young. "Guys that have been in those situations time and again don't get flustered. John Swinton and C.J. Neumann made big free throws and we made a couple of terrific defensive stances at critical times in the game."
VMI (5-11, 1-4 SoCon) entered the contest leading the nation in 3-pointers per game (12.1), also averaging an NCAA-best 38 attempts. Wofford (12-4, 3-0 SoCon) took care of the arc, limiting the Keydets to 4-of-22 – VMI's lowest output of both makes and attempts this season.
Cochran led a group of four Terriers that finished in double figures. The senior guard, coming off a career-high 33 points in Monday's win at Chattanooga, scored 11 of his team-high 19 points on 5-of-6 shooting in the final eight minutes. The last was the triple that put Wofford ahead for good with 1:31 remaining, finishing the night 7-of-16 from the floor and 3-of-8 from deep, adding five rebounds, three blocks, two steals and two assists.
Another big contributor was Neumann, who scored a career-high 12 points on 4-of-5 from the field to go with six rebounds. The 6-foot-7 forward is now averaging 6.7 points and 6.3 rebounds over his last three games.
Senior Lee Skinner added 10 points and a team-high seven rebounds, while sophomore Eric Garcia had 11 points, two assists and a steal in just 13 minutes.
For the Keydets, junior Phillip Anglade had a career-high 22 points, season-high seven blocks and game-high eight rebounds. He shot 11-of-13 from the field to head a trio of Keydets in double figures. Peterson had 19 points, but was just 1-of-7 from three, and Tim Marshall finished with 16.
Wofford outshot the Keydets 47.3 percent to 41.3 percent. Both teams made exactly 26 field goals, but the Terriers did it with eight less shot attempts. Wofford was also 7-of-18 from three and marked 80 percent on 16-of-20 from the charity stripe.
A good crowd at Benjamin Johnson Arena propelled the Terriers to a 7-2 start through the opening four minutes. The Keydets battled back as Wofford missed its next three shots and turned the ball over twice, leading to a 9-2 run that gave VMI its first advantage of the night at the 12:30 mark.
It was back-and forth the rest of the half. Wofford took its largest lead of seven when Cochran connected from three with 5:31 before the break. Again, VMI came back, scoring seven straight to tie it back up.
Garcia gave the home team a boost heading into the locker rooms. The sophomore point guard was good on two 3-pointers in the final minute, hitting the last a second before the horn to put Wofford up 41-37 at the intermission.
Garcia had all 11 of his points at the half, playing just two minutes in the second half with an apparent leg injury. It was left to Swinton and freshman Derrick Brooks, who stepped up and combined for just one turnover.
Anglade scored eight of VMI's first 12 points in the second half, spurring the Keydets to retake the lead at the 15:00 mark. The visitors led for nearly all of the next seven minutes.
Cochran turned it on late to help push the Terriers back in front. Heading into the final eight minutes of play, the senior was 2-of-10 with eight points. He got it going by picking Anglade's pocket in a tie game and driving an open lane to the basket.
Cochran's next two makes both gave Wofford a lead. He hit his final four shots, none bigger than the triple with 1:31 to go that put the Terriers in front for good.
Wofford will look to improve to 4-0 in league play when they host Samford on Saturday at 7 p.m. Wofford defeated the Bulldogs last Saturday, 68-65, in Birmingham.
