Densford, Santoro Head Sweep of The Citadel

CHARLESTON, S.C. – Sophomores Danni Densford and Bella Santoro combined to hit .531 with 29 kills, lifting the Wofford volleyball team to a three-set victory over The Citadel (25-20, 25-22, 25-19) Sunday afternoon at McAlister Field House.

Densford barraged the Bulldogs with a career-high 15 kills, hitting .591 on 22 swings. She led all players in both kills and hitting percentage. Santoro was just as relentless, posting 14 kills on 27 swings to hit a career-high .481.

The duo led a Terrier attack that finished the match hitting .340. It marked Wofford's (10-11, 3-3 SoCon) second-highest team percentage of the season, just shy of its .358 showing to defeat Alabama A&M in three sets on September 5.

"We played a much cleaner match all around," said head coach Lynze Roos, whose Terriers bounced back from a four-set loss at Mercer on Saturday. "It really gives us a boost when our outsides can be as effective as they were today. Bella was able to land her swings from both the front and back rows and Molly [Mayo] was able to find Danni up the middle. It made our offense more versatile.

Sophomore setter Molly Mayo averaged 14 assists per set to finish with a match-high 42. It was just as many as she had in last year's three-set sweep in Charleston. Her 42 assists rank 10th in program history for a three-set match. She was also able to find sophomore outside Alex Holland for nine kills.

A day after becoming the college's record holder in career digs, senior libero Jessica Graham added to her total with a match-high 15. It helped the Terriers out-dig the Bulldogs 46-35.

For The Citadel (6-15, 0-5 SoCon), Bailey Kernodle posted an effective 11 kills at .300. Zuri Fenderson was also effective with her six kills, hitting .400. However, the Bulldogs hit just .174 as a team, falling 20 kills short of Wofford's 49.

The Terriers started well, scoring five of the first six points and forcing The Citadel to burn an early timeout trailing 9-4. It stopped the deficit from growing any larger, but the Terriers were able to maintain a five-point lead. Santoro hit .500 with five kills on 10 swings, leading Wofford to a first-set victory.

Densford was overwhelming in the second. The second-year middle was nearly unstoppable, tallying nine kills on 11 attempts and leading the Terriers to a .351 attack percentage. It helped Wofford overcome a 4-1 Bulldog start to take a 9-7 lead. The Citadel rallied in front 17-15, but Densford connected on three straight kills to give Wofford the lead for good, outscoring the Bulldogs 10-5 down the stretch to take the set.

Santoro and Holland controlled the third. The sophomore outsides combined to hit .647 with 11 kills and no attacking errors. The Terriers scored the first three points and nearly led wire-to-wire if not for an early 4-4 tie. The Citadel remained within two at 18-16 before kills by Holland, Santoro and senior middle Liz Buterbaugh spurred a 5-0 run to put the match away.

The Terriers head back down I-26 on Tuesday, stepping out of conference to take on South Carolina State. First serve is scheduled for 7 p.m.
