WBB Outshot Radford to Win Three Straight

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The women's basketball team shot the ball well from behind the three point arc on their way to picking up their third straight victory, defeating Radford University 79-70 Friday afternoon in Benjamin Johnson Arena.

The Terriers (4-7) made their first four threes of the game and shot a season-best 12-21 (57.1 percent) from behind the arc to power their way to a four-game home winning streak, their longest streak since starting the 2011-12 season 5-0 at home. Forwards Kentra Washington and Peyton Walker each made four threes, with Washington shooting a perfect 4-4 from three in the game and Walker shooting 4-5.

"We have been talking about giving up good shots for great shots and that's starting to take hold," Head Coach Edgar I. Farmer, Jr., said after the game. "You can see that. It permeates throughout our whole team. You heard the energy from the bench. You heard everybody empowering through encouragement, and those are the things we had been talking about and the team has done a fantastic job of doing this. When you have something like that, it feels good to see those things come together a little bit. We knew it was going to be a physical basketball game today, and our team embraced the challenge."

Radford (4-5, 0-1 Big South) hit the first shot of the game on a three from guard Aisha Foy to take the early lead. Washington's first three tied the game at five and the two teams battled back and forth the rest of the period with Wofford holding a slight 14-13 advantage.

Guard Chloe Wanink hit a jumper on Wofford's first possession of the second period to increase the lead to 16-13, but Foy hit a three for Radford a minute later that tied the game. Walker and Washington then hit back-to-back threes to put the Terriers up 22-16 before Radford went on a 7-0 run to retake the lead.

With 4:50 left in the period, Washington hit her fourth three of the game to give the Terriers a one-point lead again. Radford kept fighting to a 31-29 lead before Walker hit a three with 3:37 left that put the Terriers in the lead for good.

Radford cut the margin to as low as three in the second half, but Wofford continued to hit their shots in the second half on the way to the home win.

Washington finished the game with 20 points on 8-13 shooting, tying her career-high, to go with a team-high seven rebounds and one block. Walker set a new career-high with 14 points on 5-7 shooting to go with two rebounds and one assist.

"I thought Kentra and Peyton did an outstanding job," Coach Farmer said. "Kentra set the tone knocking down shots from the arc and from inside and really set the tone defensively getting some tough boards. And then Peyton came in and just kept that going. They both shot the ball with great confidence, and that filtered down to the rest of the team. Effort and enthusiasm like that is contagious."

The Terriers only committed 14 turnovers in the game compared to Radford's 20, but Radford had the slight 41-40 advantage on the boards. Radford shot 44.4 percent from the field and 35.7 percent from three in the game, with Foy leading the Highlanders offensively with 26 points on 9-16 shooting.

Radford outscored Wofford in the paint 40-24, but the Terriers had better contributions from the bench, with 32 of the Terriers' points coming from non-starters.

Terrier guard Ashton Fleming also scored in double-figures, chipping in 12 points to go with six rebounds, two assists and one block. Highlanders forward Janayla White had 14 points and a team-high nine rebounds and three blocks, while forward Lydia Rivers added 11 points.

The win is Wofford's first win in three tries against Radford and Wofford's first win against a Big South opponent this season in four tries.

Coach Farmer said his team needs to continue to work on and fix the little things if his team is to extend the winning streak at Coastal Carolina Monday.

"In order to keep this going, we are going to have to really break down the film, focus on the things we did well, and really correct the things we did not do well," Coach Farmer said. "We gave up some offensive rebounds, but they are a really good rebounding team. We'll work on the details, so we know we need to make sure to get those down before we go to Coastal."

The Terriers play in the HTC Center against the Chanticleers at 2 p.m. Monday afternoon as their final game before the holiday break.
