SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Wofford College women's basketball team fell at the hands of Samford University for the second time in an eight-day span, as the visiting Bulldogs defeated the Terriers, 68-43, in the Benjamin Johnson Arena on Saturday afternoon.
Wofford (7-18, 2-8 SoCon) played the Bulldogs extremely tight through the first 15 minutes of action. Both sides were sinking shots from the floor and finding success. The Terriers jumped out to a 6-0 lead early, as freshman Kelsey Lambdin knocked down two shots from long range. Samford's Destiney Elliott and Taylor Reece would hit back to back layups, followed by an Amara Mayers three to give Samford a one-point lead.
Lambdin fired back with a three of her own. The Reading, Ohio native would sink a team-high nine points, going 3-of-4 from beyond the arc for a career day.
From there, the two sides traded buckets, going back-and-forth for the next seven minutes, with the game tying up three times.
At the 6:46 mark, Hannah Nichols took over for Samford (14-11, 7-3 SoCon). The sophomore guard closed out the half going 5-of-7 from the floor, scoring the final 15 points of the half for the Bulldogs. Nichols powered the 15-7 run, and held the Terriers to just four points until guard Maria Corella hit a three-pointer with five seconds left on the clock to cut the deficit to eight heading into the break, Wofford down 37-29.
Wofford had eight Terriers score in the contest, but no one took over. Lambdin led the team with nine points. Sophomore forward Grayson Pinholster added eight points, while junior Chanel Stokes and sophomore Kentra Washington had six each.
For Samford, Nichols powered the offense with a game-high 22 points. Ellen Riggins also recorded double-figure points, scoring 10 on 4-of-5 shooting.
The Terriers adjusted to their last time out, crashing the boards, ending the evening with a -2 rebounding margin. The Bulldogs outrebounded Wofford by 21 in the first meeting of the two teams.
The second half looked noticeably different than the first. Samford held the Terriers to 24 percent shooting from the floor and denied the team from a second-half three. It seemed that for every one Wofford bucket, Samford would add two. The team would eventually climb to a 27-point lead before finishing the 25-point game.
Wofford will continue their home stand, playing again in the Benjamin Johnson Arena on Monday night, as the Terriers hope to split the season series with the Mercer Bears. Tip is set for 6:00 p.m.
