SPARTANBURG, S.C. – It was a Senior Night to remember. The careers of Karl Cochran, Lee Skinner and John Swinton were celebrated before the game, and afterward, the Wofford men's basketball team celebrated a 78-52 victory in its home finale, Saturday night at Benjamin Johnson Arena.
Â
The three seniors combined for 26 points, 17 rebounds and six assists. Cochran scored 13 points with a game-high nine rebounds, and filled up the stat sheet with an assist, a block and a steal. Skinner also scored 13 to go with seven boards and a game-high four assists. Swinton played 13 minutes in his fifth start of the season, grabbing a board and registering an assist.
Â
The Terriers led by double figures the entire second half in what was the 100th all-time meeting between the two teams. Wofford took a 15-point cushion into the break and pushed it to as many as 29 before the final horn sounded.
Â
Cochran capped a feel-good night with the exclamation point. First, he tied the Terrier program record for 3-pointers in a career, sinking his 299th to make it a 25-point game with 2:28 left. On the very next Citadel possession,
he intercepted a pass across the top of the key and drove all alone for a windmill slam that electrified the home crowd.Â
There were 3,008 in attendance for the home finale. It brought Wofford's season total to 27,030, setting a new single-season total attendance record.
Â
Wofford (23-6, 14-2 SoCon) extended its best record through as many games in program history and remained in first place in the Southern Conference standings. Chattanooga (13-3 SoCon) remains just one game back after defeated ETSU, Saturday night.
Â
"We had a great two days of preparation and came ready to play," said head coach Mike Young. "Our interior passing was where it needed to be – we had 15 assists to only four turnovers.
Â
"After what happened to us down there [in January], it was good to come out tonight and get this win. Ashton Moore is such a good player and we were great on him defensively. We guarded him well off of ball screens and, overall, did as well as we've done on any player like him all year."
Â
Moore scored 29 points in The Citadel's 69-66 come-from-behind win over Wofford in January. This time around, the Terriers held him to just 12 on 3-of-8 shooting and turned him over twice. Brian White scored a game-high 19.
Â
Junior Spencer Collins was the scoring leader for the Terriers. The Easley, S.C. native shot 5-of-8 to score 15 points, including 2-of-3 from beyond the arc. Along with Skinner and Cochran, sophomore Jaylen Allen also reached double figures with 10.
Â
The Terriers ended the night shooting 56.4 percent, marking their third game over 55 percent this season. The Citadel came in at 42 percent and fell to Wofford in every major statistical category. The Terriers outrebounded the Bulldogs 29-24, finished with a 15-7 margin in assists, turned it over five less times and had five more steals.
Â
Seniors Cochran and Skinner combined to score eight of the first 10 Terrier points. The Citadel (10-17, 5-11 SoCon) led for all of 1:20 before a Skinner layup at the 16:42 mark gave Wofford its first lead.
Â
With the game tied at 10, Wofford put together an 18-4 run to blow it open early. Collins sparked the run with a triple and the Terriers shot 10-for-14 the rest of the half. Collins was good for four of those baskets and 10 points and Wofford went into the half ahead 35-20.
Â
The Citadel was limited to only six first-half field goals and 33 percent shooting by Wofford's stifling defense. Collins led all scorers with 10 and the Terriers were connecting at a 57.7-percent clip.
Â
There was no second-half comeback in the cards for The Citadel on this night. Wofford pushed its lead to 20 at the 10:31 mark. Freshman Cam Jackson came in and scored on back-to-back shots, earning four points and three rebounds in 12 minutes played.
Â
The final 10 minutes played out with the Terriers ahead by no fewer than 20.
Â
Wofford hits the road for its final two games of the regular season next week. The Terriers will travel to Mercer on Thursday for a 7 p.m. tip in Macon, Georgia, and conclude the schedule next Saturday at Furman.
