SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Wofford College women's basketball team saw their two-game conference win streak broken on Saturday afternoon, dropping a 69-50 decision to the Samford Bulldogs in the Pete Hanna Center.
Wofford (7-16, 2-6 SoCon) started the game flat, going just 1-of-10 from the floor to begin the game. Samford (12-11, 5-3 SoCon) did just the opposite, scoring on six of their first nine attempts. The combination resulted in a 16-4 Bulldog lead in just a bit less than eight minutes into the game. The Bulldogs refused to let up, amassing a 22-6 lead in just under 10 minutes of action.
Samford maintained its hot hand, shooting at a 50.9 percent clip (28-of-55 FG) over the course of the game. The Bulldogs' size proved too much for the visiting Wofford squad as well. The Terriers were over matched in the paint, being outrebounded 40-19 while giving up 36 points in the lane.
Two other Terriers scored in double-figures. Maria Corella shot 4-of-7 from the floor with a career-high tying four 3-point field goals for 12 points, while Kentra Washington scored 10 on 4-of-10 shooting.
Wofford was perfect from the charity stripe, knocking down all nine of their attempts.
For Samford, three Bulldogs notched 10-plus points. Center Taylor Reece led the way, scoring both in the lane and from outside, going 6-of-10 for a game-high 16 points. Hannah Nichols and Krista Stricklin scored 14 and 13 respectively.
After the intial Samford run, the Terriers tried to pull back. In the final ten minutes of the period, Wofford pulled it to a 10-point deficit, trailing 32-22 at the half.
The second half was more of the same. The Terriers' offensive efficiency jumped in the second half, as Wofford shot 43.5 percent in the final 20 minutes. Samford continued to improve on offense, scoring on 51.7 percent of their attempts en-route to the 19 point victory.
The Terriers continue their road stand, heading to Chattanooga, Tennesse to take on Chattanooga. Wofford plays the league-leader on Monday at 7:00 p.m.
