CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. – The Wofford College women's basketball team dropped their second straight conference matchup on Monday evening, falling to No. 21 University of Tennessee - Chattanooga, 68-41, at the McKenzie Arena.
The Mocs were relentless on defense, holding Wofford (7-17, 2-7 SoCon) to just 18.2 percent shooting in the first half for a total of 13 points. Chattanooga contested every shot, while forcing nine turnovers in the first 20 minutes.
Jasmine Joyner led the Chattanooga charge, leading the team in points (13), rebounds (8), assists (3), blocks (2) and steals (2) through the first half. Coming just two rebounds shy of a double-double in the first, Joyner was a force to be reckoned with, leading the Mocs to 24 points in the paint and a 9-plus rebounding margin. The Mocs entered the locker room up 32-13 after the first 20 minutes.
The Chattanooga win didn't come as much of a surprise. The Mocs had won 46 straight SoCon games coming into the game before bumping the streak to 47 against Wofford.
The Terriers were led by junior point guard Chanel Stokes. The Cincinnati native went 4-of-8 from the floor and a perfect 4-of-4 from the charity stripe to score a team-high 13 points. Sophomore Maria Corella had eight, but shot just 2-of-9 from the floor. Kentra Washington, Khadijah Joyner and Ashton Fleming grabbed four rebounds each.
For Chattanooga, Joyner led the team with 18 points and 11 rebounds for a double-double. Ka'Vonne Towns and Chelsey Shumpert each added 11 points.
The Mocs' offense operated smoothly off of crisp, decisive passes, as the team had 20 assist in the contest.
In the second half, the Terriers looked more alive, but had to fight out of a large deficit. Wofford found more success in the final 20 minutes, shooting 34.6 percent. Wofford tried to claw back into the game, but the gap was too large, as the Terriers eventually fell in the 27-point loss.
The Terriers will have a bit of a break before playing again on Saturday. Wofford will face Samford for the second time in a week span, taking on the visiting Bulldogs in the Benjamin Johnson Arena at 2 p.m.
