Adam Scott Throws Complete Game Shutout of Harvard

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – On a cold and wet Sunday afternoon, the Wofford College baseball team defeated Harvard 7-0 at Russell C. King Field. Freshman pitcher Adam Scott threw a complete game shutout for the Terriers and the offense scored seven runs on nine hits.
 
Wofford is 9-3 on the season, while Harvard is 2-2 overall. The two teams split the weekend series 2-2. The Terriers were led by Matt Ramsay with three hits and Carson Waln with two hits, three RBIs and two runs scored. Harvard only had three hits on the day and they left six runners on base.
 
The first Crimson batter of the game reached on a walk and he moved to second on a sacrifice bunt. A double play ended the top of the first inning. Alec Paradowski led off the Wofford half of the first with a single, but he was caught stealing second. With two outs, Matt Ramsay and James Plaisted hit back-to-back singles. A strikeout ended the first inning.
 
In the second inning, Harvard had runners at second and third after an error and hit. A line drive to second base ended the scoring chance. Wofford was retired in order in the bottom of the second. Harvard stranded a runner in the top of the third.
 
With two outs in the bottom of the third, Kody Ruedisili walked and Matt Ramsay hit a single. A walk to James Plaisted loaded the bases and a single to right field by Carson Waln drove in a pair of runs for a 2-0 lead. Wofford had runners on the corners when a double steal allowed Plaisted to score from third for a 3-0 advantage before the end of the inning.
 
Both teams were retired in order in the fourth inning. Harvard led off with a single in the top of the fifth inning, but the runner failed to advance. Wofford was retired in order in the bottom of the fifth. The Crimson had a runner walk in the top of the sixth and he moved to second on a ground ball. A strikeout ended the top half.
 
James Plaisted opened the bottom of the sixth with a triple to right center field. A double to right field by Carson Waln scored Plaisted for a 4-0 lead. Demetrius Jennings walked and both runners advanced on a wild pitch. A sacrifice fly by Trace Witt scored Waln to make it a 5-0 game.
 
With rain beginning to fall, Harvard was retired in order in the top of the seventh. Wofford had a single from Matt Ramsay in the bottom of the seventh with two outs, but a fielder's choice ended the inning. The Crimson went down in order in the top of the eighth.
 
Carson Waln led off the bottom of the eighth with a walk. A single by Matt Pelt and an advance on the throw gave Wofford runners at second and third. A ground out by Demetrius Jennings allowed Waln to score to make it 6-0. Derek Hirsch reached base on a strikeout and passed ball that scored Pelt for a 7-0 lead. In the top of the ninth, Harvard had a single with two outs, but a fielder's choice ended the game.
 
Wofford pitcher Adam Scott (1-0) threw the complete game to earn his first career win. In nine innings, he gave up three hits, walked two, and recorded four strikeouts. It is the first complete game shutout for an individual Wofford pitcher since Brandon Yarusi (5-0 vs. Furman on April 14, 2013).
 
Nick Scahill (0-1) started for Harvard and went 2.2 innings with three runs allowed on five hits. He had five strikeouts and walked two. Sean O'Neill worked 2.1 innings and did not allow a hit with one strikeout. Ian Miller threw a third of an inning and gave up a pair of runs on two hits. Kevin Rex went 1.2 innings with one hit allowed and two strikeouts. Dylan Combs gave up two runs on a hit with two strikeouts in two-thirds of an inning. Noah Zavolas recorded the final out for the Crimson.
 
On Wednesday, the Terriers will host Presbyterian College before a weekend series against Gardner-Webb.
