Men's Basketball Dances Again, Defeats Furman for SoCon Title

ASHEVILLE, N.C. – Wofford and Furman had met 135 times on the hardwood since 1908 before Monday night's Southern Conference Tournament Championship final. Not once, had they met in postseason play.

Meeting number 136 was a classic. After 13 ties and 11 lead changes, the Terriers prevailed to earn their fourth SoCon Tournament title in six years, 67-64, Monday night at U.S. Cellular Center in Asheville.

Junior C.J. Neumann made the play of the game. With Wofford leading by two in the final minute, Furman's Daniel Fowler drove the baseline and let a shot go that looked like it was going to tie the game. Neumann blocked it from behind to preserve the lead and the Terriers corralled the rebound.

Wofford pushed the lead to three points in the final seconds and a last-second Paladin prayer was not answered. The Terriers rushed the floor, celebrating their fourth SoCon Tournament title in six years (2010, 2011, 2014).

"To do it again is special — our fourth in six years and with as fun a group as I've ever had in 29 years of coaching," said Wofford head coach Mike Young, who has coached the Terriers to all four of their tournament titles. "These are team guys and selfless guys who represent the college and Spartanburg with unbelievable class. To be able to come in here with that net and represent our school in the NCAA tournament again is beyond comprehension and I'm beyond excited about it."

Senior Lee Skinner was named SoCon Tournament Most Outstanding Player and had a championship performance that was worthy. He tied his season-high by scoring 17 points and started 6-of-6 from the field. Senior Karl Cochran and junior Spencer Collins were named to the all-tournament team. Cochran had 11 in the title game and moved into sixth place on the school's all-time scoring list. Collins had 10 and sophomore Eric Garcia finished with 15, shooting 4-of-7 from three.

The tenth-seeded Paladins made a miraculous run to the title game, knocking off No. 7 The Citadel, No. 2 Chattanooga and No. 3 Mercer in succession. They were not intimidated by the SoCon Regular Season champions and put on an unbelievable offensive display. Furman shot nearly 60 percent in the first half and finished the night 9-of-15 from three. Freshman Geoff Beans hit five of them (5-7) to account for all of his team-high 15 points. His final trey tied the game at 56 with 9:27 to play.

Less than a minute later, junior Stephen Croone gave Furman the lead. The Paladins continued to hold a one-point advantage with the clock nearing four minutes.

Cochran came through. The senior hit a 30-foot three to give the Terriers their first lead in over five minutes. Wofford stopped Furman on two straight possessions and then Garcia put the Terriers up four with another from long range.

The NCAA Tournament Selection Show is scheduled for Sunday, March 15 at 6 p.m.
