Baseball Wins 7-6 At The Citadel To Take Weekend Series

CHARLESTON, S.C. – On Sunday afternoon, the Wofford College baseball team withstood a late rally by The Citadel for a 7-6 victory at Riley Park. Wofford led 7-3 at the seventh inning stretch, but the Bulldogs had the winning run at the plate in the bottom of the ninth before a fly ball ended the game. The Terriers won the weekend conference series against the Bulldogs for the second straight season.
 
Wofford is 27-12 overall, with a 5-4 record in the Southern Conference. The Citadel is 16-18 overall and 2-7 in the SoCon. The Terriers were led by Carson Waln, who was 3-of-4 from the plate with a pair of RBIs. Conor Clancey and Derek Hirsch each added a pair of hits. The Bulldogs had three hits each from Connor Walsh and Stephen Windham.
 
The Terriers were retired in order in the top of the first inning. With two outs in the bottom of the first, the Bulldogs had runners on the corners after a walk and a single. A single by Stephen Windham drove in the first run of the game and a single by Jason Smith made it a 2-0 score. A walk loaded the bases before a fly ball ended the first inning with three runners stranded.
 
With two outs in the top of the second, Matt Pelt walked but was stranded after a strikeout. The Citadel had back-to-back walks and a wild pitch to give the Bulldogs runners on the corners with one out. A fielder's choice allowed a run to score for a 3-0 lead after two complete innings. Derek Hirsch hit a double to left center with one out in the top of the third inning. A double play ended the inning for Wofford.
 
The Bulldogs started the bottom of the third with a double. After a fly ball, back-to-back strikeouts ended the third inning. Matt Ramsay led off the fourth inning with a single and he advanced to second on an error. James Plaisted then reached on an error and moved to second base, with Ramsay advancing to third on the play. A double by Conor Clancey that dropped in shallow left field drove in both runs to make it a 3-2 game. Carson Waln added a single and a single by Matt Pelt tied the game at 3-3. A double play and a ground out ended the top of the fourth inning.
 
In the bottom of the fourth, the Bulldogs were retired in order. Derek Hirsch led off the top of the fifth with a single. A sacrifice bunt advanced Hirsch to second, but a double play ended the top half. The Bulldogs led off the bottom of the fifth with back-to-back singles. A sacrifice bunt moved the runners into scoring position. Two fly balls ended the scoring chance for the Bulldogs.
 
Wofford opened the top of the sixth with a single from James Plaisted and a double by Conor Clancey. A single through the right side by Carson Waln drove in both runners for a 5-3 lead. A double play ended the top half for the Terriers. The Bulldogs were retired in order to end the sixth inning.
 
Max McDougald led off the top of the seventh with an infield single. With one out, Alec Paradowski hit a home run off the foul pole in right field to make it a 7-3 game. It was his third home run of the season. The Bulldogs began the bottom of the seventh with a single. With two outs, a single by Stephen Windham plated a run for a 7-4 score before a fly ball ended the inning.
 
With one out in the top of the eighth, Carson Waln hit his third single of the game. He stole second, but was stranded to end the top half. The Bulldogs were retired in order in the bottom of the eighth inning and Wofford was retired in order in the top of the ninth. The Bulldogs had a single with one out in the bottom of the ninth. A home run by Connor Walsh with two outs cut the score to 7-6. After a walk, the potential winning run came to the plate. A ground out to second base ended the game.
 
Wofford starting pitcher Adam Scott threw four innings with three runs allowed on six hits, along with three strikeouts. Elliot Lance (4-1) went two innings and with one run allowed on a hit. Connor Foltyn stuck out one and allowed a hit in two-thirds of an inning. Jacob Condra-Bogan threw two innings with two runs allowed on two hits and a pair of strikeouts. Will Stillman recorded one out for his 11th save of the season.
 
Kevin Connell started for The Citadel and went 4.1 innings with three runs allowed on six hits. Zach Lavery (0-2) gave up two runs on three hits in 1.2 innings. Ross White went an inning with two runs allowed on three hits and three strikeouts. Zach Sherrill worked an inning with one hit and one strikeout. Skylar Hunter did not allow a hit in the top of the ninth.
 
The Terriers' nine-game road trip ended with a 4-5 record. Wofford will return home on Wednesday to face USC Upstate at 6:00 p.m. for the first of seven consecutive games at Russell C. King Field.
