Baseball Wins 8-5 At UNCG

GREENSBORO, N.C. – On Friday night, the Wofford College baseball team earned an 8-5 win over UNCG at the UNCG Baseball Stadium. The game was tied at 2-2 after five innings, but the Terriers added one run each in the sixth, seventh, and eighth, along with three runs in the ninth inning for an 8-2 lead. The Spartans scored three runs in the bottom of the ninth and had the tying run at the plate when a strikeout ended the game.
 
Wofford is 31-15 overall and 9-6 in the Southern Conference. UNCG is 20-21 overall and 10-9 in league play. Carson Waln had two hits and scored twice, while Max McDougald drove in two runs on two hits. Demetrius Jennings had one hit and scored four runs. The Spartans were led by Collin Woody with two doubles, but they committed five errors in the game.
 
Alec Paradowski opened the game with a walk. After a fielder's choice by Carson Waln, James Plaisted reached on an error. Conor Clancey hit a single to drive in the first run of the game. Wofford left a pair of runners on base to end the top of the first inning. The Spartans were retired in order on three ground balls in the bottom of the first. Wofford went in order in the top of the second inning.
 
The Spartans led off the bottom of the second with a double. With two outs, a single by Tyler Long drove in a run to tie the game at 1-1. A ground out ended the second inning. With one out in the top of the third, Carson Waln hit a double. Two strikeouts stranded Waln in the middle of the third inning. With one runner on base after a walk in the bottom of the third, the game entered a rain delay.
 
After 35 minute delay, the next batter reached on an error. A base hit by Hunter King drove in a run for a 2-1 lead. With the bases loaded after a walk, a line drive into a double play ended the third inning. Demetrius Jennings had a single up the middle with two outs in the top of the fourth inning. Max McDougald hit a ball to shallow right field and the ball was dropped. Jennings scored on the play to tie the game at 2-2.
 
In the bottom of the fourth inning, the Spartans left one runner on base after a single. Alec Paradowski led off the fifth inning with a single, but the Terriers stranded one runner to end the top half. UNCG was retired in order to end the fifth inning. With two outs in the top of the sixth, Demetrius Jennings walked and stole second. Max McDougald singled through the right side and scored Jennings for a 3-2 lead. The Spartans went in order in the bottom of the sixth inning.
 
With one out in the top of the seventh, Carson Waln doubled down the left line. Back-to-back wild pitched with James Plaisted at the plate allowed Waln to score for a 4-2 advantage. Plaisted and Conor Clancey walked, but were left on base at the seventh inning stretch. The Spartans added a single with one out and the runner moved to second on a failed pickoff attempt. Austin Embler reached on an error to give UNCG runners on the corners. A foul out and ground out ended the seventh with both runners stranded.
 
To lead off the eighth inning, Demetrius Jennings reached first on an error and moved to second on the throw. As single to shallow left field by Max McDougald drove in Jennings for a 5-2 lead. McDougald was stranded at second base to end the top of half of the eighth.
 
After a strikeout to start the bottom of the eighth, Collin Woody hit a double to left center. A walk was followed by a strikeout, but the runners advanced. A fly ball to left field ended the scoring chance for the Spartans.
 
James Plaisted led off with a walk to start the ninth inning and he advanced two bases on a failed pickoff attempt. Conor Clancey reached on a walk and with runners on the corners a double steal allowed Plaisted to steal home for a 6-2 advantage. With runners at second and third and two out, Max McDougald reached first base on an error that allowed both runners to make it an 8-2 game.
 
In the bottom of the ninth, a strikeout was followed by back-to-back walks for the Spartans. A hit by pitch loaded the bases. A single by Aaron Wright drove in two runs to cut the lead to 8-4. After a strikeout for the second out, a ground rule double by Eric Kalbfleisch plated another run for an 8-5 score. With the tying run at the plate, a strikeout ended the game.
 
Wofford starting pitcher Matt Milburn (9-1) threw seven innings with two runs allowed on five hits, along with four strikeouts. Jacob Condra-Bogan went an inning and allowed only one hit with two strikeouts. Will Stillman threw the ninth inning and gave up three runs on two hits, but recorded three strikeouts.
 
Ryan Clark (6-5) started for UNCG and went 6.1 innings with four runs allowed on six hits. He had a season high eleven strikeouts and walked three batters. Tyler Frazier added 1.2 innings with one hit and one run allowed, plus two strikeouts. Julian Abreu worked the ninth inning with three unearned runs allowed on three walks.
 
The Terriers will continue the series at UNCG on Saturday at 2:00 p.m., with the final game on Sunday at 1:00 p.m. Wofford will host Clemson on Tuesday night, followed by a trip to South Carolina on Wednesday.
