Baseball Defeats UNCG 7-5

GREENSBORO, N.C. – In the second game of the weekend Southern Conference series, the Wofford College baseball team needed a couple late runs to hold off UNCG 7-5 on Saturday afternoon at UNCG Baseball Stadium. The Terriers secured a win the weekend series against the Spartans for the third straight season.
 
Wofford is 32-15 overall and 10-6 in the Southern Conference. UNCG is 20-22 overall and 10-10 in league play. The 32 wins are tied for the most in school history for the Terriers, as they also won 32 last season. Matt Ramsay had two hits and three runs scored, while Kody Ruedisili had two hits and three RBIs. Derek Hirsch and James Plaisted added two hits each. The Spartans were led by Aaron Wright with two hits, two RBIs, and a pair of runs scored.
 
The Terriers had the bases loaded in the top of the first after a walk, a single by James Plaisted, and a hit by pitch for Conor Clancey. With two outs, Kody Ruedisili hit a double to shallow left field to drive in a pair of runs. Wofford left two runners on base, but led 2-0 after the top of the first inning. The Spartans opened the bottom of the second with back-to-back singles and a walk loaded the bases. A pop fly and a double play ended the scoring chance for UNCG.
 
Wofford was retired in order in the top of the second inning.  UNCG added a single with two outs in the bottom of the second, but a strikeout ended the frame. Matt Ramsay opened the third inning with a single and James Plaisted followed with a single. A ground out moved the runners into scoring position and a sacrifice fly by Cody Miller made it a 3-0 game.
 
The Spartans had a runner at second after a single and error with two outs in the bottom of the third inning. A double to left center by Collin Woody drove in a run for a 3-1 score before a ground ball ended the third inning. Derek Hirsch singled with two outs in the top of the fourth and then he stole second base. Hirsch scored on a single by Alec Paradowski, but Paradowski was thrown out at second on the play to end the top half with a 4-1 advantage. UNCG was retired in order in the bottom of the fourth.
 
In the top of the fifth inning, Wofford was retired in order. The Spartans had a base runner following a walk. With two outs, Aaron Wright hit a home run just inside the right field foul pole to cut the lead to 4-3. Both teams were retired in order in the sixth inning. With one out in the top of the seventh, Derek Hirsch singled. He was caught stealing second to send the game to the seventh inning stretch.
 
The Spartans had a single to lead off the bottom of the seventh and the runner advanced on a sacrifice bunt. A fly ball moved the runner to third and a walk gave UNCG runners on the corners, but a fly ball stranded both runners at the end of seven innings.
 
Matt Ramsay and James Plaisted led off the top of the eight with back-to-back walks. A sacrifice bunt by Conor Clancey moved the runners into scoring position. Carson Waln was intentionally walked to load the bases. An infield single by Kody Ruedisili drove in Ramsay for a 5-3 lead. A double play ended the top of the eighth for the Terriers.
 
With one out in the bottom of the eighth, Eric Kalbfleisch reached on an error. He moved to second on a sacrifice bunt and single gave the Spartans runners on the corners with two outs. A fly ball to James Plaisted in right field ended the eighth inning with both runners stranded.
 
In the top of the ninth inning, Derek Hirsch reached first on a passed ball after a strikeout. Alec Paradowski was hit by a pitch. On a double steal, both runners advanced and a throwing error allowed Hirsch to score for a 6-3 score. With Paradowski on third base, Matt Ramsay hit a double to left center to drive in Paradowski. After stealing third base, Ramsay was out at home on a fielder's choice. A fly ball ended the top of the ninth with Wofford holding a 7-3 lead. UNCG led off the bottom of the ninth with three straight singles to load the bases. Max McDougald caught a foul ball at the railing of the Wofford dugout for the first out. A sacrifice fly by Collin Woody plated a run for a 7-4 score. With two outs and runners at first and second, a single by Eric Kalbfleisch drove in a run to make it a 7-5 game. The tying run was at the plate, but a 6-3 ground out ended the game.
 
Wofford starting pitcher Luke Leftwich (5-2) threw 6.1 innings and gave up three runs on seven hits. He walked two and had five strikeouts, giving him 89 on the season to lead the Southern Conference. David Ehmen faced one batter and recorded one out. Spencer Kulman went an inning with one hit allowed and a strikeout. Jacob Condra-Bogan recorded the final out of the eighth inning. Will Stillman worked the ninth with two runs allowed on four hits.
 
Andrew Wantz (5-2) started for UNCG and went 6.1 innings with four runs allowed on seven hits. Bryant Stafford went the final 2.2 innings and gave up three runs on two hits. He had three strikeouts and three walks.
 
The Terriers will conclude the series at UNCG on Sunday at 1:00 p.m. Wofford will host Clemson on Tuesday night, followed by a trip to South Carolina on Wednesday.
