Heffron Named to CoSIDA Academic All-District Team

GREENWOOD, Ind. – The College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) announced the 2014-2015 Academic All-District At-Large teams on Thursday afternoon, with Wofford College men's tennis senior Walker Heffron being named to the 12-man team for District IV. Heffron marks the first Academic All-District selection for the Terriers' men's tennis program.

In total, 12 student-athletes from each of the eight districts, representing the United States and Canada, are selected by CoSIDA members. The 96 selections advance to the Capital One Academic All-America Team ballot, where first-, second- and third-team All-America honorees are scheduled to be released June 11.

"I'm really proud of how Walker played for us this season," said 15th-year head coach Rod Ray. "For he and Rob to go undefeated in doubles play during the conference season was truly incredible. You almost never see that happen, and it was special to witness. I'm obviously proud of Walker off the court as well – his dedication to his studies is reflected through the hard work he puts in both on the tennis courts and in the classroom."

Heffron, a native of Charleston, South Carolina, competed for the Terriers in both singles and doubles play this season. As one of the team's captains this season, he competed primarily at the No. 3 position in singles play, while moving from No. 2 to No. 1 doubles half way through the season. After the shift to the top doubles spot, Heffron paired with classmate Rob Galloway en-route to an 8-2 record on the season, including a 7-0 conference mark. Heffron and Galloway earned a spot on the All-Southern Conference Doubles First Team for their play – the first duo to be awarded the honor in Wofford history. In SoCon play, Galloway and Heffron never won a match by less than three games.

Off the court, Heffron carried a 3.9 GPA while majoring in biology with a minor in computer science and graduated Summa Cum Laude. The senior is an Old Main Scholar and South Carolina Palmetto Fellow, as well as the recipient of the Dewitt L. Harper, M.D. Scholarship. Heffron adds to previous scholar-athlete accomplishments with his All-District nod, as he was named to the ITA's Scholar-Athlete team in 2014 and was a member of both the 2014 and 2013 Academic All-Southern Conference teams. In 2014, Heffron was also named the recipient of the Southern Conference Don Bunch/Buddy Hartsell Sportsmanship Award.

Alongside Heffron on the District IV At-Large Team are Stephen Behr, Jr. (Golf, Clemson), Phillip Brennan (Golf, Troy), Anders Albertson (Golf, Georgia Tech), Jimmy Beck (Golf, Kennesaw State), Chad Brears (Ice Hockey, Alabama – Hunstville), Nicholas Fink (Swimming, Georgia), Tynan Stewart (Swimming, Georgia), Dylan Grisell (Swimming, Florida State), Connor Oslin (Swimming, Alabama), Anton McKee (Swimming, Alabama), and Daniel Leitner (Tennis, South Alabama).

To be eligible for Academic All-America consideration, a student-athlete must be a varsity starter or key reserve, maintain a cumulative G.P.A. of 3.30 on a scale of 4.00, have reached sophomore athletic and academic standings at his/her current institution and be nominated by his/her sports information director.
